So Ottawa has replaced Victoria as the best place in Canada to live. Ottawa was 1st in 2007 and 2008.

We don't have the best year round climate but there are many other compensations.

I wonder if the people who do these surveys ever take the public transport in these cities . . .

There was no recession here in Ottawa from what am told when we came on our house hunting trip for a week last summer. House prices are outrageous due to all the Govt jobs and military folks being posted in and out

They tell me property can't fall in Toronto due to a whole number of factors that are largely similar to what people used to tell me when I lived in the home counties prior to 2009. Apparently the only way is up.................

BTW when we came here in 1963 we bought a new bungalow in Crystal Beach for $17,000, they now sell for around $400,000 thats about 24x.
My bungalow back in the Luton area sold for 2750BP in 1963, they now sell for around 165,000BP thats about 60X. Crazy.

I have been in Ottawa since 1963 and the ratio of public to private employees has come down. Public (Government jobs) now account for 19%. I never worked in the public sector.

Where did you pull that stats from, perhaps it's time for you to sell, make a huge profit if you still have the same 1963 house, and move to a huge mansion in Manotik or Cornwall?

The stats by the way are simple to obtain for recent sales.

Federal employees accounted for 19.7% of Ottawa–Gatineau's total employed labour force of 680,100. This proportion has remained unchanged since September 2009, as federal employment in this CMA has increased at the same pace as total employment.
