Does anyone have any cost-effective and efficient options they care to recommend?

I would have thought UHAUL would be about the cheapest?

We've used them within town and locally but not super long distance.

It depends on how much stuff you have. U Haul may not be practical if you have a complete house lot. Probably the least expensive if you can fit all your worldly possessions in.
When I moved to NS from ON ten years ago I had North American Van lines do it. There was a tractor trailer load and then some. Back then it cost $14,000 !

U-Haul seems best bet for sure.

We looked in to u-haul to get us from Edmonton to Halifax.
For the size of truck we needed, it was approx $5500... plus gas, and any other expenses you'll incur on the journey (meals, hotel, etc).

Instead, we booked a removal company to do it all in (incl. car) for about $7000.
u-haul definitely wasnt a cheap alternative.

There are other options to look in to, such as bigbluebox or PODS, which are pretty cheap. Unfortunately for us, they dont service Nova Scotia.

I moved from Ont. to Victoria BC in October 2010. I used 'Great Canadian Van Lines ' . I was well pleased and would use them again.
I believe their home office is in Delta, BC but you can check www.greatcanadianvanlines.com
