Re: Off to Vancouver in 5 minutes!!!
Thanks everyone for your good wishes!
We had a fantabulous weekend, and we came 2nd in our section (mid-sized choruses) and finished in 4th place overall (out of 18 choruses)
So I have two nice shiny new medals to collect dust now!
For anyone who doesn't know what I'm on about .... it's a form of female "barbershop" singing, the "Sweet Adelines".
It started in America (obviously) as an offshoot from the men's singing, and is now an International Organisation. Our region 26, (Western Canada) has some of the very finest choruses, and the girls that won our competition this time competed at the Internationals last year and were placed 3rd in the World!
Our Chorus:
http://www.rhythmoftherockies.org/
International: http://www.sweetadelineintl.org/
Checkout the Sweet Ads site for a chorus near you ...... If you like to sing (and are female!), you don't HAVE to be a wonderful trained singer. It's about taking ordinary women with ordinary voices and making extraordinary music!
It's fun, exciting and interesting, and a fabulous way to make a whole bunch of new friends if you are a stranger in a strange land! There are also chapters in the UK, btw, so there may well be one near to where you live, even if you haven't moved to Canada yet!

Re: Off to Vancouver in 5 minutes!!!
I found this group by researching online before I came over .... never having sung "a capella harmony" before, and it looked like fun, and a great way to meet people with whom I had something in common. So once I was established here ... about 2-3 months after landing, I just went along. Jan 2006 I joined. I never dreamed I would learn so much about singing though, and I can really say I have made some wonderful friends!
I called the contact person, who luckily lived quite close to me, and she offered to pick me up that first evening. After that I suggested that we take it in turns to drive in. It was a good way of getting a regular "visit" and we got on very well from the start!
