Rather a shocking one - quite sudden. He went into the hospital on Saturday and passed away a few hours later.

Saw that. Don't know him but as I'm only slightly older, it did make me think.

I'd met him a couple of times - he was the councillor for the adjacent ward to mine, and was what most people seem to think a local councillor should be: engaged with his community, prepared to go out on a limb in support of a local issue, happy to make a public spectacle of himself in a good cause - an all around good egg.
Personally shocking because he's pretty much the same age as me. A bit mind-concentrating, that.

He was only 10 years older then me. Condolences to his family.

He had had several run-ins with various cancers, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, I believe. His latest round of treatment (chemo) wasn't all that long ago. He likely had a severely compromised immune system, so that kind of infection would presumably have hit him harder and faster than others. Poor bugger. His funeral was this afternoon.

Sad news. I'm a few years younger than him, and it's made me realize that you just don't know what's coming down the line, moreso from me, as I'm a seriously lazy lump. Might spur me into some kind of action (doubtful).
