Most top loaders are not as efficient, simply as they use more water, so need to heat more water, However, not all toploaders are created equal...there are energy star compliant ones out there if you look for them that are pretty efficient.
The short people I know have the sense to build a small platform in front of the machine to make reaching in easier As a taller person I used to hate bending double to empty a front loader, although a platform would work there too I suppose.
I still dont fancy trying to pour a bucket of stinky diapers into a front loader though Retailers like top push front loaders because A: as a european import they simply must be superior . B: newer is always better, so you can sell a new front loader to someone who already has a functioning top loader, and C: with the heavy load cantilevered on the bearing, and a dependence on seals to keep the floor dry, they can count on selling you a new one much sooner than if you buy a top loader
I wonder if they are like cars...it takes more energy to build a car than it will use in its lifetime, so buying justifying a new washer based on reduced energy consumption might be doing more harm than good in the long term:?

Our washer and dryer came with plinthes which lift them a little over a foot off the floor. The door opens at ideal shovelling height. I don't know that it's a big deal but I have the idea that water efficiency is more important in a rural location than an urban one, not because the water comes from a well but because it drains into a septic system which may have a finite capacity.

I'd counter dbds septic "capacity" comment (its a septic, not a holding tank...excesss water drains off)...but point taken. nuff said. Ive a picture of my oil tank here somewhere..taken for insurance purposes..thats back on topic isnt it?

Your kids are going to love bringing their broken bicycles to Dad for fixing:
"Well son, I'll need to strengthen the frame with Titanium flat rod, cut to a 45.61 Degree shampfer and guaranteed to ISO 340000000001 and then replace the wheels with Dilithium crystal spokes oscillating at 3.2Khz with an off-centre cam."
"...but Dad, I only have a puncture."
On the subject of the thread - I'll get me camera oot for tomorrow too.

Here's a thing.
Ok, courtesy of www.flashearth.com I attach aerial shots of where I currently work in scenic Newfoundland and where I used to work in not so scenic Basildon as seen from above. Not a profound amount of difference is there?

1)Approach to Vancouver from Comox
2)One careful owner, individual style, remote location, water front property. We just might be able to afford this!

I'm aiming for a typical day but it was cold this morning so there were no homeless beggars. It rather pissed me off to drive along with the windows open, camera ready, and not be accosted. If it's warmer tomorrow maybe I'll cheat a bit and get some shots then.
Anyway, leaving the driveway, the road and the one streetlamp, too cold to beg, not very culturally adapted, this sign always says "Gardiner moving slowly".
