I wonder if other people in Canada think of the Brits as "those people who get worked up about snow tyres and block heaters". On this board people hold quasi religious views on these matters, outside the board I've never heard them mentioned; they're like rugby or Marmite.

And boy, talk about worked up! I made the mistake of making what I thought was a casual remark about the difficulty of a franchise-based league, and the lack of propotion and relegation between divisions, leading to a lack of incentive for teams to perform well if they're in the bottom half of the league... and that maybe if the Leafs were threatened with relegation from the NHL they wouldn't (and neither would the fans) be so unconcerned with not having won anything for 40 years. Oops - nearly got my head bitten off by normally-mild-mannered-neighbour!

We're talking "ICE" hockey, virtually the only kind that exists in Canada.

that's not Hockey - that's some strange game that some poor unenlightened people play on a field rather than an ice-rink

Well it's the last weekend before most of the kids and some of us adults begin our winter term at school etc.....
There are lot of us who have come over in the last 6 months and who have yet to experience the utter delight of the Canadian winter.
Is it true that snot turns in to icicles? You have to buy a snow shovel as soon as they are in the shops? kids have to learn not to touch metal? Hair can snap off? And believe me I have heard some other worrying stuff too!
What with it being the end of the summer now and all, I thought it may be time to broach this point so we can begin to prepare.
So any advice on what to do and what not to do, what are good leisure persuits, kids, driving, cars, clothing and life in general will be warmly welcomed by myself and I am sure many other newbies and wannabes!
And of course there is always the issue of each area can often vary from another in the same province, EG: we are known as the Windy BEs thanks to the crazy winds and chinooks down here (which I have yet to experience) but I know many of you will experience a much harsher winter than we will...
So come on folks tell us your stories, post any pics and give us the benefit of your knowledge, believe me, we will need it!
An autumnal feeling (and rather scared at the thought!)

Two guys from Toronto die and wake up in hell.
The next day the devil stops in to check on them and sees them dressed in parkas, mittens and toques warming themselves around the fire. The devil asks them, "What are you doing? Isn't it hot enough for you?"
The two guys reply, "Well, you know, we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happy for a chance to warm up a little bit, eh."
The devil decides that these two aren't miserable enough and turns up the heat.
The next morning he stops in again and there they are, still dressed in parkas, toques and mittens. The devil asks them again, "It's awfully hot down here, can't you guys feel it?"
Again the two guys reply, "Well, like we told ya yesterday, we're from Canada, the land of snow and ice and cold. We're just happy for a chance to warm up a little bit, eh."
This gets the devil a little steamed up and he decides to fix these two guys. He cranks the heat up as high as it will go. The people are wailing and screaming everywhere. He stops by the room with the two guys from Canada and finds them in light jackets and bucket hats, grilling sausage and drinking beer.
The devil is astonished, "Everyone down here is in abject misery, and you two seem to be enjoying yourselves."
The two Canadians reply, "Well, ya know, we don't get too much warm weather up there in Toronto so we've just got to have a cook-out when the weather's THIS nice."
The devil is absolutely furious, he can hardly see straight. Finally he comes up with the answer. The two guys love the heat because they have been cold all their lives. The devil decides to turn all the heat off in hell.
The next morning, the temperature is below zero, icicles are hanging everywhere; people are shivering so bad that they are unable to do anything but wail, moan and gnash their teeth.
The devil smiles and heads for the room with the two Canadians.
He gets there and finds them back in their parkas, toques, and mittens. NOW they are jumping up and down, cheering, yelling and screaming like mad men!!!
The devil is dumbfounded, "I don't understand, when I turn up the heat you're happy. Now it's freezing cold and you're still happy. What is wrong with you two???"
The Torontonians look at the devil in surprise, "Well, don't you know? If Hell freezes over, it must mean the Leafs have won the Stanley Cup."
