I was writing something about the abundance of *-words (N-word, L-word, S-word...) in our contemporary society, when I suddenly remembered a funny little story that took place 60 years ago - in France.
Jean-Paul Sartre had written a play - La putain respectueuse (The respectful whore) which proved to be a success - but theater managers felt the word "whore" would be offensive to some, so the play was advertised all over the place as "La p... respectueuse" - The respectful wh... A strange thing happened then; because the play had become so well known, "respectful" became a slang term for "prostitute" and theater managers started advertising... "La putain r..." - The r... whore!
