Re: Nostalgia Corner

My OH was amazed to find out I have never ridden a bike, but I had a scooter instead. I loved that scooter, it was blue with red lettering (can't remember what the lettering said though). I used to whizz everywhere on that thing. I am sure I am miss-remembering, but I seemed to go straight from scooter to cars.

In summer, loads of really big ants with wings would appear. They rarely flew, seemed to spend a lot of time crawling on the pavement outside our house - they used to creep me out big time :( The few times they did fly, they always seemed to fly straight at you and often got caught in my hair. That always freaked me out

So I used to spend a happy time running them over with my scooter, very satisfying to get back at them!!

My younger brother had that but I'm pretty sure it was a different name. I checked and none of the alternative names on wiki sound 'right' either.

What was that one with a tray and plastic pieces wedged in on a springed sliding bar? You had to remove one without springing the bar.

Ah...got it.

My grandparents had this

It's still made today - we have one at home :)

They also had a pop-gun shooting gallery game, which IIRC involved shooting corks at a bunch of cats sitting on a wall. Not really a cat person, my granny...

My grandparents had a shove ha'penny board, I remember it as being made of wood with inlaid metal lines across the board. Can't remember the rules though.

They also had this really cool horse racing game - it was a wooden box with horses on strings inside. You opened the box, took the horses out and pulled them to the end of the string. Then you turned the handle at the side and the horses wound in on their strings. I remember the horses falling over a lot!! :)

I wonder what happened to those, probably worth loads now!!

Oh wow! We used to have a shove ha'penny board - you had to get the ha'pennies in between the lines.

We also used to have a table skittles game (with a pole with a ball on it and pins in places on the board).

I remember going to a pub in West Sussex with some friends and they had table skittles - it was such fun. The bar billiards looks great - that would look great in my living room. I think I need to get some of these old games for here, my OH would love them. And his kids are so boring, hopefully they would love them too, even though they aren't computer based!!

I love playing bar billiards, lol, been playing it since I was in my early teens! I've never seen it in Canada, would love to play again if I could find somewhere... there's nothing like a pint of guinness and a few games!

I remember a couple of pubs with it, but I really don't recall where. I have an idea one was London.

Since you mentioned Guinness, what about Barley Wine topped up to a pint with cider?

Got smashed on that at the Bridgwater Carnival in 79 or 80 on an office do. I blame my (more than) friend Sue. Mass sickness absenteeism the next day, but I made it in.
