Default No-Tip Restaurants

Saw this and thought it was a reasonable idea if the staff wages are actually put up.

Also liked the comments that people in Vancouver are Canada's worst tippers.........

Your just indirectly tipping by paying a higher price for the food.

Well that will not work in Oregon (yes I know its not Canada) as all workers even in restaurants make the minimum wage which is about 9:30 per hour. Most employees at McMenamins pubs etc. would howl as would all servers.

Servers don't make much less in BC from the general min. wage and serving alcohol is the only way a server will make less then the general min. wage.

Min wage is 10.25 and if the servers don't serve alcohol they make min. wage of 10.25/hr, if they serve booze then they make 9.00/hr as a minimum.

"His servers will receive between $20 and $24 an hour while cooks will earn $16 to $18 an hour"

Cooks/chefs, articles like these usually fail to differentiate... Typical of any establishment where those in the kitchen earn less than those at front of house. Absolute bullshit in my opinion. Put one of them in the kitchen and everything goes south. Much harder work, more skilled, more stress... And no tips.

Don't ever work in one. Most people usually tip on the quality of the food not the service. Remember that.

For the most part if one tips on the service, there is no need to tip at all. Most servers, bring the food out, come back once (not always) and ask the obligatory 'is everything tasting alright' and clear the empties away. This all falls within their normal job, so is not an exceptional service that demands a tip at all, wages are the responsibility of the employer.

Tipping is to reward someone for doing extra, not paying them to do their job. Paying low wages in restaurants and expecting the customers to pay the rest of the wages only facilitates the exorbitantly high margins charged on food.

In my experience, its always the cooks/chefs that earn more per hour than the rest of the staff based on the premise they dont get tips, then the bar staff for the next higher earnings as they get drinks bought (supposedly) and the wait staff the least, as they get tips, out of those tips they have to pay an amount per person served or a percentage of money taken to the kitchen. This is based on my experience in the UK and my daughters experiences here in Canada.

I read quite a few of the comments and the general consensus is that adding 18% to the meal price and not leaving a tip will not go down well.
Allegedly in Japan, Australia and some European countries you don't tip.
Tipping seems to be more North American but has reached other countries.
Tipping is based on receiving exemplary service not what you are supposed to do in your job. Yes I know servers earn minimum wage but other countries where they don't tip seem to have no problems or is that because they pay them a decent wage?
So a service provider mmmm
How about tipping the guy who changes your oil at Mr Lube, The drive thru person at Tim Hortons/McDonalds, the cable TV installer, and a raft of others we could name.
How about tipping the nice friendly smiling CBSA officer as they welcome you home?
Yeah I thought not

i tip 10% usually, or round up to the next bill amount (which often works out at about 10% anyway)

unless they've done a crap job...then they get zero...

The no-tip system is great, except when you have crap service and you're keen to show dissatisfaction by not leaving a dime (but can't show it).

Once we did exactly that. Not leave a dime. Or to be more precise, we left 10 cents less than the actual bill.

Slightly off topic but here is a heart warming story if that way inclined that shows exemplary service given by others that don't expect tips in their job

Love the bit about Air Canada employees
At least if Susie gets a monetary reward she won't have to declare it to CRA as a tip

Doesn't the "ever so nice" Canadian Govt. automatically tax restaurant servers at wages + 8% so they effectively tax their tips.

How will that work for a server in a "No Tip" business.

No. You have to self-declare your tips.
