Nintendo Wii ??

Hi

Santa has been asked for a Nintendo Wii this year. We wont be moving to Alberta until February.
Has anyone taken a UK Wii to Canada?
Did it work? Is it a case of buying a new power lead? Do the games bought in Canada work on a UK version?
Or do we need to say Santa has taken it to Canada for us for when we get there?

Any help appreciated

Gary

A Canadian power supply will suffice to get the machine to power in Canada as they are basically drop down transformers. However, a console bought in the UK or Europe will be PAL and Canada use NTSC, which are not compatable. You may find TV's that are capable of both, or a pal to ntsc converter can be purchased freely online:)

I'm pretty sure that the games are region-locked - so you won't be able to buy games in Canada.

and.... you wont be able to buy downloadable games from wii points, I left mine in the UK and bought here.

Why don't you price out the money for a Wii in Canada and keep the money back for the Wii until you arrive.

Would the handsets and WII fit swap over from UK to Canada?? I am thinking that they will. I don't see why there would be any issues as iit is the output from the WII that is different.

Cheers

Yeah but like I said before the Wii would no longer be able to go online and get new games or use the wireless function as it would be connected to the euro servers. I had thought about taking my UK Wii over but decided against it.

The games are all region coded so they will not work, I say why worry when you are moving two months after xmas so you may as well wait two months and then you wont have any issues at all.

I am looking at taking the controllers and fit board and selling the consoles at a knock down price. That way I would have controllers for the canadian system so won't have to buy extra for the three rugrats that cry when I hog the WII.

So they will work yeah??

I am selling the games from the UK system as they won't work on the Canadian system and the kids will want more newer games as they come out so will need to get them anyways.

Cheers

I don't see them as being a problem and I can't see why they wont work, I don't think the controllers are region coded.

I did a quick search and found this

Only one answer but I would take them (if you have them anyway), they can get expensive buying all the controllers, if they don't end up working you could probably sell them anyway.

Thanks for that

I looked at the specs and couldn't see a reason why and from a manufacturing process it would have been a nightmare for WII to make it a different system for each regions controllers to communicate with the base set.

We will take the Fit board and the controllers and then buy a base set out there.

Thanks again have a good one eh!

What do you have to do to get your Wii on line and is it worth it? What happens when it is online?

Have a wireless system in the house and set your wii up in settings to detect your wireless. Input your security code for your wireless into the WII when it asks.

After that you have to purchase WII credits to get the internet browser and you are away. It was about 8 bucks from what I can remember.

Use your controller to surf the net on the TV..... it is really as easy as that and if you get stuck have a look in the user book or the website as it is listed there how to get online.

http://uk.wii.com/ will show you how

I knew it was time to replace the old laptop when the WII was surfing the net faster :)

I hadn't thought about issues with Canadian games not working. You could always ship one over from Canada so there is something on Christmas day and at least it would work when you get there:D

That's my plan - I understand that accessories will work (fit board, guitar hero controller, etc). I think you can transfer 2 Miis to the Wii-mote so you can bring your characters with you, and also you can transfer game data to an SD card - so I think that if you buy the same game in Canada, you would then have all your existing game data!

Well yeah cause you can buy and download old school games, you can use the internet and the wii can be updated using the wireless function, some games e.g. Animal Crossing can be played with other players online.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for your reply's

It seems this is an interesting question! I have read all your replys with great interest.
I think we will go for the 'Santa has sent you one, but he sent it to Canada by mistake!' Our girls are only 3 and 5 so we should hopefully get away with it.
I think this will avoid any problems.

Thanks again everyone

Gary
