She had a claim to fame in the early 80s, during the Falklands thingy. There was no real map of the place, other than a geological one, that she had produced. The forces used that. It made the papers.

Given what I saw of her abilities, the forces could quite easily have invaded New Zealand.

I fink the idea is that snow gets held in sideways blowing wind. If the wind is prevented from blowing by, say, a fence, it will lose the ability to keep the snow airborne. The trick would appear to be to figure out where gravity takes over.

You are much brainier than me but my take is that you position the windbreak according to where you want the snow to settle. We get the odd bit of snow around here. Much of it comes sideways. The drift is always on the leeside of the car.

It works just the same with rivers. Erosion takes place on outside bends. Deposition takes place on the inside of meanders, where the water is moving more slowly and doesn't have the energy to keep the stuff moving.

I got the geography prize at school, me. The teacher fancied me.
Lead is apparently what I have between my ears. It seems you are right.

Apologies to batty for doubting her word. I'll buy her a gin and tonic next week.

So to be effective, a snow fence must be erected 34 x it's height away from the drive that it is being used to protect. Unless you have a lot of land, snow fencing to protect residential drives would seem to be a non starter.

That certainly would appear to be the case in urban areas.

We have a chain link fence on the north edge of our driveway and although we don't get large drifts the snow is always deeper there when we have snow accompanied by a north wind.

I suspect it would be much worse if it were a solid fence.

Quite. To keep an average driveway clear, all you need do is construct a regular fence, windward, 35 times higher than the drive is wide.

Alternatively, you drop a semi-retired neighbour $300 each Winter and let him deal with the snow.

Proof, if needed, that economics beats physics every time.

I accept your gracious apology and wallow in vindication and self-righteousness.

Ahh. I'm in the process of constructing a solid fence about 6 ft from part of my neighbours driveway. He's not lived through a winter in that house yet. He might be in for a shock!
