No idea who she is, but to the extent that Canada needs/wants a GG, she seems, on paper, to be excellent.

A well paid post for simply being there and doing what she's told.

Of course the office (and the method of selection) of Governor General is outdated and archaic and smacks of colonial times and all that other guff. But it does provide a very convenient way to separate the head of state from the head of government, which in my view is probably worth the archaism. I'm not especially pro- or anti-monarchy, and I certainly wouldn't care if the G-G had nothing to do with being the "monarch's representative" or however it's officially designated. But if the alternative is a directly (or even indirectly, via an electoral college) elected politically-affiliated president, then I'll keep the G-G, thanks very much.

Of course having a foreign monarch as head of state does mean that you get it on the cheap, a bonus really. Why keep a dog when the neighbour has one?
