I am beginning to realise why you have faced the difficulties you have.

I think that's unfair. The OP didn't say they couldn't be arsed. They said the school in the UK probably couldn't be arsed but that they would try anyways.

Hi all, I just thought I would ask if there is anyone out there who knows an answer to my dilemma.
My oldest son is in grade 12 and is meant to take his English diploma exam in June. However, our work visa's run out at the end of May and my husband does not wish to stay any longer as our family will have been apart for 3 and half months as it is, so applying for an extension to our visa is not an option, especially as it will cost more money and we need every penny we can get.
I have spoken to my sons school who i found very unhelpful and was told that there was no way they would move his exam forward, and that it is very difficult to take the exam from outside of Canada, so if what they are saying is right, then my son will leave school without getting his high school diploma, after 13 years of education.
My question i guess is does anyone know of a way around this other than us HAVING to apply for an extension, paying another months rent and paying for vias's, bills and more expensive flights.

the only other thing i could think of was that he scraps taking the exam and does an online English GCSE when he comes home, but i'm not sure how that will look in terms of his education as it seems to me that to get a high school diploma you have to take grade 12 english...is the GCSE not equivalent?
I just think the whole thing is wrong and that they should at least let him take the exam early, even if its on the day he actually leaves the country after all its not his fault that all this has happened to us!
I just keep meeting brick walls and i'm getting really fed up with trying to get someone to help us out with this.
If we stay its going to cost us nearly another $3000 just for a matter of 3 weeks, which we simply can't afford!
Any help would be appreciated. I know i'm going to get some that say that we pay the extra money and stay but we simply don't have it so please don't suggest it!
thanks

I apologise if I'm repeating, since I haven't read any other replies.

The diploma exam dates are fixed. No can can get them done earlier. However, you might get a more help from "distance ed" and the MAP program (Modular Academic Program). Phone your school board (not the school - they may not know, unless you get the right counsellor) and ask about your son completing his diploma by Distance Ed through a computer based program (once home in the UK). All Alberta School Boards now have these initiatives.

This is the link for these guys

Actually - phone them and they could probably point you in the right direction.

Gotta have somewhere to live whilst here for the extra time and pay utilities etc.

If there are no other options, sitting a GED exam might be an option. I believe the age limit is 16 so your son should be old enough and have the education to walk it.

Just a suggestion, good luck!

Not being arsed in your comment, not mine. I have been accused of putting words into others' mouths too many times in the past and having the "bigot" label thrown at me too many times on this forum to be very careful with the posts I comment on these days.

I called it as I saw it and am happy to incur any wrath people choose to throw at me.;)

I asked for advice, not your opinion and your comment i feel was uncalled for. Don't they train you in law school these days to keep your opinions to yourself unless asked for and i didn't ask for it.
If you've had that label thrown at you before maybe you should only comment on things you have advice on and not you opinions especially when it wasn't asked for in the first place. Just 'my' opinion!

what a silly thing to say. What is advice if not opinion?

I still don't see why your son can't stay with a friend - or even in a motel, as Piff Poff suggested - for a couple of weeks after you leave. How long has he been at school here, that he has no friends who would be prepared to put him up for a few days? I don't mean that to be unkind; it just seems odd to me. I'd have no hesitation in cadging a bed for myself or my kids from any of several friends and neighbours, if the need arose.

This is a most unfortunate dilemma for your family. If one looks at this from your son’s perspective, then staying to complete his high school education is the least stressful and most product choice – it is only for less than 30 days. In the end, he will finish all those years of education with his credentials completed and be able to use them to get a job or for higher education. This is a high stakes exam and as a test-taker, he needs the best possible environment to do this in. Usually, the exams are not at the end of June, but somewhat earlier in the month, so your accommodation costs won’t be a full month. Trying to find other ways to complete this may be difficult for him and jeopardize the outcome – it may prove more costly as well. Attending his graduation ceremony with you and his classmates, might also be important to him (in the future) as a culminating event in his life.

I totally agree with oink but the fact is were are living on $500 a month after paying bills etc and we have to buy food out of that too so we really don't have the money to stay any longer. We have to save for flights out of this and some money to go back with so as you can see its not much. If we could let him stay financially i wouldn't hesitate believe me but its just not viable.
Hopefully this school in the UK will come through for us :fingerscrossed:

Find attached the Alberta Grade 12 Diploma Exam Program PDF.

Draft Schedule for June 2011 is Section 22.42 on page 22-37 of the document.

Hope this helps.

Re: Need advice about Education in Alberta??

fatcat, I know you're looking at other options, but wanted to let you know that military kids are in the same boat as you, unfortunately. Military parents of kids in that age groups are warned about the potential implications for high school graduation/ taking of gcses etc. In most cases, children of that age group are encouraged to stay in the UK at boarding school for that precise reason - it is very rare for the Army to extend a posting here so that a child can sit exams at the same time as their peers. Mostly they move back to the UK in time to start their GCSE coursework...

Really hope it works out - is there really no-one he could stay with for the last month? We had a friend move in for six months to complete 'O' levels (showing my age) as her parents were moving... really no-one? I would make an appointment to speak with the School Counsellor and go through the scenario and see if he/ she can come up with any suggestions...
