I think you need a bilingual TV.

On the subject of which, what the hell is going on today? It's gone from -24 to -6 in six hours.

If you scan only local media for local weather then, yes, you can find the forecast expressed in metric units though even Environment Canada provides a toggle to imperial. However, what if you want to know if it's worth driving to Florida this week? You need to know fahrenheit for that.

If one is desperately parochial and particularly interested in bureaucratic matters in Canada then yes, one can live in metric but, my, that's limiting yourself.

This thread: http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=513055 would less appealing if it were worded 'Fancy 0.565 of a litre?'

Yes, the Gatineau airport was reporting -24 at 7 am and at noon it was reporting -6...that is a big jump.. there is a bit of snow on the way and often when snow is approaching the temperature goes up. I often find the early morning temps at Gatineau Airport to be very low in the winter...for example, the 7 am temp at Ottawa Airport was -14 and the noon temp was -6. Is Gatineau Airport in some sort of frost hollow or does the urban heat island effect Ottawa Airport more than Gatineau Airport...as the crow flies they are less than 20 km apart with no noticeable change in elevation etc.

An amateur station in Stittsville is reporting -2.8 c http://twsheppard.homeip.net/Weather/index.htm

with a high for the day of -2.3 and a low of -19.7

In Gatineau they use French metric measures while in Ottawa they use English metirc ones.

There are ONLY TWO nations in the world that still cling to the Imperial system of measurement..........

Wait for it.......

The USA and Myanmar, previously known as Burma.

Even in the USA, medical and science types work in Metric and it is only the lay person that still thinks in Imperial, despite being surrounded by Metric usage. Examples abound. The Mustang has a 5 litre V8 engine, The Pepsi comes in 2 litre bottles.

But ask an American how tall they are in centimeters or how far it is from New York to Miami in kilometers and get a blank look.

I would bring the b.s.w / b.s.f, there as rare as hens teeth over here and the British car restorers will pay a fine penny for them.

Ask a typical New Yorker how far it is to anywhere outside New York and you'll probably get a blank look.

What about England, Scotland and Wales? I bet people there know what a pint of beer is, how tall a 6' man is and have a good idea what "hung 8 inches" means.

And much abused. Most Canadian barstaff use a little-known measure called a pint 'ish.

Talking of which, about six in the Yard?

Australia. I recently heard an interview on the radio with a man who'd been trapped in a tree by crocodiles. He said he was "miles from anywhere, six feet up a tree". He sounded neither happy nor metrified.
