Re: Masks
Yeah there was a time when we saw those tree air fresheners hanging from everyone's rear view mirror, now its multiple masks. Now if we made nice smelling masks, two birds one stone?

Re: Masks
My mum has just told me her and my younger sister (who has multiple disabilities resulting in a severe developmental delay) were asked to leave a store due to my sister being unable to wear a mask due to her disability. Obviously my mum was masked as she has no reason not to be. Despite my sister's appearance giving away to anyone with half a brain that she may not be 100% normal these idiots seemed to be blind. I told her they should have stayed until (and if) the police arrived. As far as I am aware AODA and the official government page stipulates that those who have a legitimate disability should not be denied access for not wearing a mask and no proof is able to be requested due to PHIPA. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.
We are going to the media and potentially filing a human rights complaint and/or a police report with this.
Another instance of the incessant jobsworth personality that is so rife in Canada and another reason I want out of it.

There was a case locally at Vernon hospital where a guy was refused treatment and escorted off the property by security as he wasn't wearing a mask. He did however have a shield on and apparently had some lung capacity issues that left him unable to wear one. The hospital was having none of it and had him removed as they said a shield was inadequate and against regulations!
I think eventually he got an appointment and was accepted by the department he was going to but my guess is without the story circulating on local news and social media sites he wouldn't have got his wish.

I sympathise and understand your frustration with the situation but before you go in all guns blazing cann I ask you a couple of questions about this. Was it one person who asked them to leave? Somebody junior perhaps who was doing as they were told in order to keep their job? If so then start with the person in charge before escalating this especially if it was a a locally owned store.
storeI get the impression they said leave or we will call the police, so probably a place with security so big box stores.
I'm rambling a bit here but start with contacting the store, tell them that it's a human rights issue. That people should be treated with respect and dignity. They had no right to ask why your sister wasn't wearing a mask, it's enough that she or her carer says she is unable to.
Start there and then escalate, usually the threat if a human rights complaint focuses the mind. You can also contact your local health unit and ask them to educate the store.
i feel for you and your mum, I have a similar problem when I'm refused access because of my service dog. It's belittling and demeaning to be harangued about a disability.
Let us know what happens.

No idea about the actual legal rights but it does seem that even though they said there were exceptions for people who couldn't wear a mask these apparent exceptions are often overruled by the business concerned.

I had someone say to me well she shouldn't be allowed in because i'm not comfortable around someone not wearing a mask...well guess what you being uncomfortable does not trump the fact that she has a disability. She is uncomfortable every day of her life the covid worriers can be uncomfortable for 10 seconds passing by her. Or go around her and keep distance.
You're right and they are wrong but

My brother and his gf said they witnessed something similar happen to a disabled child in a wheelchair at the other Indigo store in London so it is something that has to be taken up with the district manager.
My mum is pretty upset about this and if a satisfactory response is not elicited we will be taking it to social media and/or the human rights tribunal, simply on a matter of principle.
My sister has the mental capacity of a four year old. She doesn't understand covid. She cannot put a mask on and keep it on without assistance/forcing by others, therefore as per the province she is exempt from mask wearing.
Are stores now not allowing children who are below the recommended/required age for mask wearing in the store?
What you said is essentially what we are going to do... contact the store first and then escalate as appropriate. It was a big box store, Chapters. My sister the poor thing all she wanted to do was look for new toys and books for the first time in months. She was so excited even asked my mum specifically to take her there. My heart is breaking for her as it's such a developmental milestone for her to even think of asking to go shop at a specific store, only for her to be told she is not allowed because she's not normal.
Cheers for the support xx

Re: Masks
Yes I told mum this is what they would try to say - that store policy overrules the provincial exemptions. Unfortunately no matter how much they try store policy does NOT overrule the AODA or the law.

Unfortunately it wasn't just a junior employee. The junior employee asked them to leave and my mum politely stated that she has a disability and exemption from wearing a mask and continued past them. Then they sent all manner of supervisors, managers, and then the head manager of the store following them around the store and they wouldn't stop harassing my mum until they left.

Re: Masks
According to what I have read , supposedly stores are permitted to refuse entry provided that they offer an alternative way to obtain the service / goods - such as 'curbside pickup' / 'delivery' / internet online order / an appointment made in advance. (I'm not for one second saying it's right or just.... I disagree with it entirely).

Re: Masks
We got our vaccines today, and while we had blue "medical" grade 3 layer masks they were making everyone use the masks the vaccine site uses, and while they are also medical grade blue masks and 3 layers, there is a significant difference between the boxes sold at the consumer level, the ones provided at the vaccine site were a lot higher quality, thicker, and fit better, and more comfortable.
