In downtown Toronto offices, most people want to run back to suburbia after work ends, leaving little opportunity for after work socializing. That coupled with a freewheeling hire and fire culture, means most people regard their work colleagues as little more than transients with little incentive to invest social or emotional effort in.

I think the process of "making friends" is doomed to failure. Hang about with people you share an interest in or whose company you enjoy. And relax.
