Re: Love it or list it Vancouver
In that episode, the wife was an airline pilot (with the standard 3-day full time job...) and the husband an Engineer, who also appeared to be the househusband.
Most of the value in that house was in the land and the $100k spent apparently added $150k to the value, which is more than usual and probably due to the low value of the house itself to start with. They only did the open concept living room.
They appeared to be over-stretched in their current house because their budget for improvements was pretty tight.
They made the right decision to 'List it' and got a comparatively good large house with a coach house for the money for the area of town they appeared to be in.
Personally I think they need to do some 'Move to' houses outside Vancouver and North Vancouver and some 'Love It' houses out into the Fraser Valley.
The subject houses seem to be pretty much Vancouver and North Shore and some of the 'Move to' houses do drift off past Horseshoe Bay or into South Surrey, Steveston and Tswassen (for sea views). There have been the odd one or two out towards Langley and one in Mission, but that's about it.
We have probably watched every episode because it is quite funny - it is very corny and scripted. You can usually guess exactly when the husband or wife are going to say they have 'had enough of this' or what nightmare building fault or Code violation is going to happen etc....
The presenters work well together. Neither of them has any dress sense though...Then there is the 'designer' who can only say 'Okayyyyyyyyyy'

I think it depends on who applies to the show. Maybe they havent' had a lot of Fraser Valley-ers applying.

Another one to watch is 'Buying Alaska'. The last episode had a $US2 million house with 9000sq ft and two elevators, one of which was just to bring the shopping up from the garage...

As for a UK version - watch out for that soon. The obvious partnership of Kirsty and Phil are hosting this on Channel 4.

Well, they might be if the current owners inherited the house from their parents. Otherwise, a couple each working full time at $22 an hour will be able to afford up to, say, $450,000 depending on the size of deposit they can put down. I am assuming a mortgage at current rates. More realistically, the couple earning $22 an hour each who want to be in Vancouver will rent or buy a condo if they want to buy, and look to move to the suburbs if they want more room to raise a family.
$2m is the price of an average single family home in the Westside. It is the posh part of the city and not somewhere most people would expect to be able to buy in. Imagine the show was done in London and they concentrated on people selling homes in Chelsea.

Getting hard to find houses in the under 450k price range even in the burbs unless you get way out there.
I am wary of condo's, so many seem to end up underwater at some point, at least everyone I know because of major repairs that end up needing and having to take out large loans to pay the strata, or the value of said condo drops or barely moves.
Condo's where I am for example really don't move up much, they peaked in 2010, but no sign of going up and a lot have lost value.
We could in theory someday buy a condo but it would be in a 30 year old building and realistically would that be a good investment and would the building last another 30-40 years? Hard to say.
Moving to the burbs really makes no sense in my view if your job isn't out in the burbs, long term commuting to downtown or in Vancouver from way out east or North isn't really sustainable.

I just wish that one week they would find no issues with the house they are renovating, and that they decide on the first house they see rather having to see three every time

And the "love it" party always finds fault in everything in the first house regardless and is coming round to the third one every time......even if the third one has similar perceived issues as the first, they are now ignored.....
