Local newspaper stories
A little self selected bias here but three stories in this weeks local press interested me.
One was a about a deer being shot while it was swimming. Second was the trial report of a fox hunt, on horseback, being carried out without a license Third was a bull elk on private land being shot from the roadway with the carcass left behind. Hunters eh? Not very sporting. The rest was mostly Christmas stuff, house fires, missing ammo at the Pen, and many bad teeth in Emerge. What's happening in your world? |
Re: Local newspaper stories
someone got shot
someone was murdered who was "known to police" (ar ar) there's an affordable housing crisis some let an exotic killer fish in Deer lake, AGAIN, ffs what if the pipeline ruptures again? what if there's a tanker oil spill? Turns out people don't like buying houses near pipelines BC Hydro rates are going up, and the school district has to find more money for heating/power that it doesn't have |

The town I live in is more or less boring, so the news is generally boring. I think the paper comes out 1 or 2 times a week, not sure since I don't subscribe. But here is what is leading on the website.

Re: Local newspaper stories
the most exciting bit of local news we have had lately was a swingers club catching fire in the basement at night and the fire dept rescuing 'patrons' and them emerging half naked on the pavement covered in blankets
fire down below ;) plus the predicable news of innocent women wearing headscarves being insulted by ignorant racists and how the government inspired QC charter of values is behind all this nonsense :( and every now and again 1.how some person, known to the cops, got snuffed out 2.how the Champlain bridge is being patched up lest it collapse entirely 3. a major water main, installed 80 years ago, has broken and burst 4. a major pot hole alert, since they are seldom filled 5. Government corruption and municipal kickbacks |

Re: Local newspaper stories
We have a new garbage sorting program. It's not just wet/green and dry/blue anymore. And it's mandatory.
Unfortunately it's not simply glass, paper, plastic in one and everything else in the other. We now have to rinse yogurt pots and put them into blue/recycling. Ditto for Styrofoam meat trays. We are actually required to wash garbage before throwing it out. Using up water. Hot water. We used to recycle grocery bags by putting food waste in them. Not now. Two sheets of newspaper so particularly thick wet stuff seeps through and sits smelling in the bin until collection day. Coffee grounds in single cups go in blue but coffee grounds in filters go in green. Broken glass can be wrapped in newspaper. Food waste can be wrapped in newspaper. The former goes in blue, the latter in green. But no more than two sheets. Bags have to be clear so they can see the right garbage is in the right bags. And presumably they will count the sheets of newspaper. Tissue/kitchen paper goes in blue unless used, in which case it goes in green. I'm sure we can all think of how this stuff has been used so it needs to go in green, but why would it ever go in blue if it's not used? So that's three different things that could go in blue or green with no way of the collectors telling just by looking through the bag. Non compliant bags  are rejected with an orange sticker and you have to re-sort or have it removed at a cost of $100 - now being enforced. Not surprisingly, illegal dumping has increased. Especially of bags with orange stickers. |

Couple uses taxi as getaway car. He has to "make a withdrawal" and pops into store while taxi waits with accomplice in the car.
He holds up the store ($300 and cigarettes) gets back into car to continue to destination. Other car blocks path, driver tells cabbie what happened. Couple try to make escape. He removes her wheelchair from the taxi, she gets in and they leg it with him pushing her.:rofl: |

Not the local paper but local radio.
This morning our second (expected) big snowstorm had begun, schools closed, warnings about driving conditions etc The announcer/newsreader said advice was only to go out if essential. Then in the next sentence advertised that today was a seniors discount day at a named store. This was not pre-recorded, but one of those sponsorship style things. If he'd said "...sponsored by (store) who are holding a discount day..." then that wouldn't have been so bad. But "don't go out unless essential....come and shop at our store today" just looks silly. |

But is nobody connected to the police ever thinking how can we discourage unnecessary travel via a medium encouraging people to do the opposite? How about the marketing/advertising people? Don't they see an advantage in a common sense policy registering as such with their customers? Perhaps this is another example of "it's the way it is" and not even thinking about it. |

Yet another story about people complaining of their cars being 'booted' after parking where they're not supposed to park.
This guy claims it's illegal interference with the operation of his property, or mischief, and he plans to test it by contacting the RCMP to charge the booters the next time he gets booted for deliberately parking where he's not supposed to. |
