Given that its snowing outside and its bl**dy cold again, I thought it might be nice and uplifting to have a thread where we can post some suggestions for interesting places to visit in Canada that are not so well-known.

I'm thinking along the lines of lesser-known tourist stop-offs, attractions, scenic drives, off-the-beaten-track stuff, the weird and wonderful, etc. Post pics if you have them too.

Need something to look forward to or cabin fever will set in!

Thats a tough one really - being married to a Canuck we don't tend to do the 'tourist' thing - I suppose he is in the same mindset that we as Brits were back at home ie - it's on your doorstep so lets take it for granted.

So the things we do and the places we go are more about hanging out and having fun.

Soooooo what would I suggest thats away from the 'norm'??????

Go camping down to Police Outpost, right on the Montana border and next to Waterton. There's nothing there but lots of mountains and fishing lakes - so take a boat and fish, walk in the hills, and generally be outdoorsy.

Buy a back country map - it shows you all of the rivers lakes and ponds and tells you about the walking / riding / quadding trails, make an effort to go and visit one of these (though try and do it in the summer - we got the truck stuck in some back of beyond place in the foothills with no cell service lol - that was fun for all of 2 seconds!)

Next weekend is the sportsmans show in Red Deer, go there and check out the latest quads / boats / hunting fishing stuff.

Go to the nearest lake and go ice fishing.

Stettler has a cool steam railway that does trips to Big Valley - you eat on the train and then some of the excursions include a train robbery with cowboys on horses.

Go to a Rodeo - even the small local ones are great

Get a group of friends together and hire some quads if you don't own any, and go quadding out west (if you're in alberta!)

Lots of little local towns hold anniversary days - check one of those out - they are fun and the people are great!

I've really only seen the Major stuff.

second tot last trip over I visited the Aerospace Museum in Toronto on my last day, OH is into that sorta thing and we had time to kill with nothing to do.

If you ever want to see the smallest most pathetic excuse for an aerospace museum, go there!

I can't believe if made it onto the map! Wish I'd gone to see the castle instead!

We were there a couple of weeks ago. It's undergoing serious repairs so you might want to phone to check that it's operating before heading out (and, yes, I know it doesn't run in the winter, I'm thinking of the spring).

Wow - I didn't realise there were two such attractions. I've actually been to the PEI potato museum www.peipotatomuseum.com . The highlight of the museum is the big sculpture of a potato outside the door, which looks for all the world like a giant turd on a stick. Hours of fun, as you say, for all the family.

I keep threatening to drag the family to the Halton County Radial Railway museum if they misbehave. I can imagine it would keep one amused for several dozen seconds.
