That's why I don't eat lamb, that price tag... I like lamb though, but its a niche food in North America and costs a small fortune compared to traditional meats.

The stores sell it here year round, almost always frozen though, they can't sell it fast enough to keep it fresh and unfrozen. Can also find ostrich, bison, rabbit and duck, but always frozen as well.

Safeway's chicken is also very expensive, I find. Why is meat so expensive?

Lamb is great but I don't consider it a premium meat. Prime rib is arguably a far tastier meat (that's always good, every time) yet it's probably half the price of the lamb.

Supply and demand stuff, I suppose.

Jesus! If that's a lamb, I'd hate to see the size of its mother.

It wouldn't bother me if I never ate beef again in my life, but it wouldn't be a life worth living without lamb.

I love lamb, but it's pretty pricey in the UK too. Read that the US ambassador has claimed he has been fed it too much in the UK How dare anyone criticise British food? Indigestible dinners made this country great | Life and style | The Guardian

Occasionally I see lamb half price with a couple of days to go. It goes in the cart and straight into the freezer at home.

But last week Superstore had some packs of that outrageously priced Blue Goose organic chicken breast (and boneless skinless thighs) at a quarter of it's price. It was cheaper than their current offer for "club pack" breast. I bought about fourteen packs. Absolute bargain.

So cheap I think I'll use the 'saving' to subsidize some lamb

I just hope they're not composed of unused bits of the mother, meat-glued together with unwanted chicken parts and anything else left lying around on the butcher's table

Funnily enough I picked up a frozen leg of lamb joint in Dominion (Loblaws) today. Put it back when I saw it was $35!. Lamb is a rare treat in Canada.

I read this article on the CBC earlier in the week.. Higher meat prices in store for consumers - Business - CBC News. and then proceeded to research vegetarian recipes....

Safeway tends to be the most expensive place in general, but chicken has been expensive in BC since the day I arrived in 2004, and has never gone down.

Beef and pork used to be a lot cheaper, but they have gone up a good amount as well.

I've dumped meat for the most part, and gone mostly vegetarian since its cheaper, not because I want to, but meat is just too much $$$ now.

My GF will eat sea food, so she still eats some meat since fish is pretty cheap still, but me, I cannot stand sea food, have yet to taste anything from the ocean that tasted good.

Upside is my blood pressure, cholesterol and weight have all gone down to health levels since dumping meat, so its not all bad.

Lamb chops are eyewateringly expensive. Racks are even more.

Legs of lamb are not quite as bad and you could probably get a reasonable one for the price of that pack of chops.....

I used to buy half a lamb at a time from a local farm, that was reasonably economical. Now that I no longer live with a lamb eater we fret about the ever-increasing price of salmon.

I buy more lamb than anything else but I go straight to the source. There is a local supplier here in town and it's always pretty reasonable. I used to buy the frozen stuff from Aus. or NZ but the local is better. As a matter of fact it's a roast leg of for dinner this evening. I'll wash it down with a glass or three of Merlot. Very nice !

Very little cheap fish here. Breaded, frozen stuff's not bad, but fresh (including frozen 'fresh' ) is more expensive than a lot of pork and beef.

And why do sausages cost more than some steak?
