Scilly, you've probably seen this as it was on the CBC News, but I found it an helpful explanation on why there has been so little whistleblowing over the years. It's a very good interview.

Shard .......... thanks fort that. Yes, I've also seen/read lots of interviews similar to that.

One silver lining might be the appointment of the new Governor-General.

Mary Simon, the first Indigenous person to be appointed to that role. Her mother was an Inuit, father a white man.

I heard her say in her speech that she had "not been lucky enough to learn French at the Federal Day School she attended" in her community in northern Quebec, but was intent on learning it as soon as possible.

That school has also been one with lots of claims being made against it for ill-treatment.

I have the sense that the silver lining will be public opinion no longer sweeping the allegations and stories under the rug. Somehow the recovery of bodies makes the whole episode and the TRC findings that much more tangible, especially in the current political climate. An Inuit GG sounds like it will support reform too.

I think we (at least here in Canada) are getting closer and closer to atheism, hopefully one day people will realize that religion is all about control. A 2,000 year old scam.

Yes. I think even the USA has made great strides in the last 10-15 years. The internet is proving to be the poison pill for religious indoctrination.

What I don't understand is why the Pope is so unwilling to apoligise, have you followed that at all ? Is it because the Catholic Church does not want to directly admit guilt and then be liable for compensation claims ?

In Canada it wasn't just the Catholic Church that ran the Residential Schools.. http://www.trc.ca/assets/pdf/2039_T&...2011_final.pdf (Non denominational were Federal schools) The explanation (2nd page of pdf) lists all Residential Schools and their denomiination, it's an interesting read.
So many tragic, unnecessary deaths.. so many lives ruined by being stolen away from parents.. despicable acts.

A = Anglican / Anglicane
B = Baptist / Baptiste
C = Catholic / Catholique
M = Mennonite / Mennonite
N = Non-denominational / Non-confessionelle
P = Presbyterian / Presbytérienne
U = United / Unie

...... and now we have a new Governor-General who went to a Residential Day School where she was not allowed to learn French, even though it was in northern Quebec.

But the school she went to has also had allegations of mis-treatment of the children made against it.

Another 160 (about) undocumented and unmarked graves found at another site ......... the residential school on Kuyper's Island, off the east coast of Vancouver Island. It operated from the mid-1880s until mid-1970s

A report was released today with further information on the Kamloops Residential School.

The number of potential grave sites is revised down to 200 from 215 as a result of archeological reports about excavations and assessments done in the same area in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

BUT the ground-penetrating radar specialists says she surveyed only one hectare of a 65-hectare area and there is still forensic investigation and excavation work to be done.

Next to be searched here are the grounds of Thunderchild School at Delmas. It wasn't in operation as long as most of the others, but records show quite a few deaths due to disease.
