The Joy of Driving
#1
Have you seen that VW advert asking when the last time you took a 'night drive' was? Nobody actually does that because our roads are full of potholes and other cars.
I passed my test last November and I thoroughly enjoy taking the car out on the road, my Mum sees this as an absolute bonus because she bloody hates it.
I wonder though when the novelty will wear off, or if it will disappear even faster on Canadian roads (if/when we finally get a car over there!) So the question is, when did the fun go out of driving for you and began to be seen as more of a chore, or even a dangerous but necessary exercise? (dbd's blog makes extra-urban travel in the winter sound like a lottery, with your car and your ability to walk as the stakes. I envy him not.) Or do you still relish the thought of putting the key in the ignition, whether here, or on the other side of the pond?

I'm coming up 61 and the fun has never left, I still quite enjoy driving. We usually go out to Vancouver Island once a year (approx 1,000kms) it's a two day drive these days (used to do it in one) and although Mrs_P is a good driver I do all the driving just because I enjoy it.

Hitting 80mph on an frozen lake with an ATV induces giggles too

I don't think I've grown up much.

not having this any longer, or a decent windy road to put it on, has sucked the joy from me.
driving a modern SUV is very nice, starts first time, fits all the family and all that non essential stuff, but it has the soul and feeling of Tony Blair.

Hubby thinks I'm odd that I've always detested driving - passed my test in UK when I was about 24 -took me till I had my son at 31 to actually buy a car and drive. Then I bought an automatic despite passing my manual test - I don't see the gears as a challenge - I see them as a pain in the arse - much rather let the car make the decisions...
For me - the car gets me from a to b - and transports goods from Ikea
- that's it.
Even tried the ATV last year - it's ok but I got more fun from the old lawntractor that you point in the direction you want to go in and that just let it crawl along. I guess my problem is I just don't want to concentrate - my head's in the clouds - and driving a car obviously forces me to pay attention. I'm actually quite a good driver - safe but not rediculously so - just don't enjoy it.
