It's a made up north american marketing thing designed to get people into the ships. Why would somebody from somewhere else have heard of it?

Errrrrmmm....because of the news it creates a day after, like pepper-spray fights at wal-mart? Additionally, the power of the internet

Yes me! Had I not been in Canada on a bargain hunting trail for a fixed period...it might seem like a bit of a coded message...hence why I asked....I am now enlightened so you can carry on with your quest one companion lighter! You don't get to know about it unless you ask. Best of luck.

The news it creates after in *gasp* north america. Shopping sales in north america aren't really of interest to people who don't live there so, understandably, they don't spend time researching them on the internet.

NO, As I mentioned before I wasn't joking...nor do I feel lots of people are...this is an evidently unknown private celebration, for certain parts of our forum....prior to asking the question on here, I polled my husband on the telephone and all of our neighbours and we were all in the dark. I fear we may not be missing something, but do let us know, a few posts on, if this is not the case.

Black Friday is the way Americans get into the Spirit of Christmas.

Obviously, channeling the urge to spend money you haven't got on things you don't really need and punch, kick and trample your fellow man to get to them first is what you do to really get in the Christmas mood.

Sadly, some Canadians are also irresistably drawn to this appalling display of consumerist greed and base human nature.

MillieF and friends aren't missing anything at all.

What about those that simply wish to buy presents for their children, their family, their friends at a lower price? Not all camp out all night beforehand;)

There are other ways to get bargains.

I am probably going to be pilloried here for saying so, but Christmas isn't supposed to be about buying stuff for people!

By supporting these kinds of consumer events, people are just perpetuating the mistaken idea that their life can be better with more stuff and that they can make other people happier by buying them more stuff.

Anyone who ignores Black Friday won't miss it.

Anyway, like most of these consumer-hype things, they are already getting greedy and lengthening the time of the event and before long, the bargains to be had will be minimal and not worth all the fuss.

Shopping is hugely over-rated and is not the key to happiness.

Learn to knit.

That will provide some cosy, inexpensive, lovingly hand-crafted gifts for your loved ones, whatever the occasion or time of year.

It will also give you something to do with your hands and keep you out of mischief.:p

Aha!
Here is a GREAT Black Friday bargain!

http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/ref=...SIN=B004HKCGQK

I have no idea what the Hell it does, but you plug it in and it is 67% off, so I must need it, mustn't I?

And as it is on Amazon, there is not even any need to get up in the middle of the night and scuffle with the great unwashed on the threshold of Walmart!

Very nice of SEARS

https://www.cfpsa.com/en/SupportOurT...s/OP-Wish.aspx

I'll like to see more discounts to us folks, in the US they have tons of free entries and discounts for the mil pers, even took advantage of this when we went to Disney last year and in Chicago. I also have a discount card for the UK that allows me and the family to receive discounts at various stores

Don't get me wrong, a few places in Canada do, but it's not on the same scale as in other countries.

Black Friday is even more fun if you're in retail and have to spend the day listening to people bemoaning the lack of deals compared with the US and then trying to haggle with you over the price of everything.

Black Friday over here really just gives people more of an excuse to act like tools
