...London, that is.

~ -18c over night in parts of England, -3c right now in London (according to my temp guage), and the ice on the London walkways and roads have already had me arse over tit twice.

I tried to get to the office in the car but gave up after 15 minutes of struggling to get the frozen snow off the windows. It's on a day like this that i hate having the ability to work at home.

I've seen Ice Road Truckers so am able to drive on ice by default and will give it a go later on.

I'm now warming my cockles with a cottage pie sandwich.

-24 here at the mo - I'm off to work 'cos we got snow tyres, innit? That's all the UK needs really, snow tyres. They fix everything.

Enjoy your snow day ;)

Couldn't you scrape that small amount of snow and ice off the windscreen? If that amount of snow stops you in your tracks, you should hope for home based employment when you get to Canada.

I'm moving to Vancouver so i'll be fine.

My scraper (CD case) wasn't adequate for removing the ice and me being lazy gave up after figuring out effort would be required to continue my journey.

By the way, the picture of my car was taken AFTER my feeble 15 minute attempt.

How old fashioned! CD's? What are they? Scraping the ice off with your ipod is not as practical, so the well heeled gentleman should use his (gold) credit card instead!

Sounds as if there's a marketing opportunity in the UK for windshield brush/scrapers. Where are all the entrepreneurs?

Likewise! It's been -6C out in the Fens and although it snowed yesterday it melted and refroze so the road this morning, after another light dusting, looked just like the Ice Road - beautiful but dangerous.

Pfffft.....snowed in here in mid Kent on our "holiday" back to the UK. Can't get round to see all the rellies we wanted to as a result. Brother had to abandon his car on the way home and walk last night. Tried to escape the village in the hire car today but the bald tires couldn't get us further than two roads away. This morning some of the family set off on a snowy trek to Morrisons to panic buy some bread and milk.

(Only about 4 to 6 inches on the ground.....pfffft)

Currently I am worriedly gnawing fingernails at the prospect of more snow to come and we are supposed to fly back to Calgary on sunday.....ho hum.

British panic buying (in the event of inclement weather, public holidays, the start of war in the Gulf etc) seems to be centred around bog roll and bottled water. I recall shopping in Tesco's back in GW2 and not being able to buy any bottled water to use after we'd gaffer taped ourselves under the stairs to wait out the inevitable chemical/biological/nuclear terrorist attack, so we bought wine instead. We'dve perished in a happy state.

On "recycle"? Fancy car like that you think would do better.

Reminds me of the old "Protect and Survive" pamphlet published in the early eighties. As I recall the main idea was to take a door off its hinges, lean it against a wall and crouch under it!

I have the DVD, which is pretty entertaining. I'm still trying to imagine the government seriously believing that people would watch calmly as they showed ads explaining how to bag up your dead relatives and leave them outside for the post-apocalyptic bin men.

Wonder if they'd do a weekly pickup or whether you'd have to wait a fortnight?

Well I braved the weather and walked to my local supermarket - well Somerfield anyway!
There was no bread, no milk and couldn't even buy and flour to make bread!
So I queued (!!!) at the bakers and we were rationed - only allowed to buy one loaf each!!!!!
My car hasn't moved for two days! I think it's the lump covered in snow on my driveway!!!
And this is set to last! The news even said that some of the people in the "know" suggested it could go on until March!!!
:(

On the contrary. If you make a nice cottage pie and have posh french stick type bread on a side dish, you just scoop the pie onto a lovely butter laden piece and chomp away. Try it, i think you'll be surprised ;)

Are you dreading the snow and winter that could last until march or are you weary of the impact the snowfall has had on infrastructure and day to day life? The winter will last into March in NS, but the roads will be cleared and society functioning within a day after the biggest of storms. I suppose it is more of a fact of life here than the UK and the infrastructure is avalible to deal with it. Weather wise though, maybe this is an omen? We get hit with "weather bombs" here that are often a mixed bag of rain and snow, sometimes it is cold and windy. Although the forecast for the next couple of weeks is quite clear with a couple of cold days next week. http://www.theweathernetwork.com/fou...qlink_lt_14day

I don't mind the weather. I grew up in France where our small town was mentioned on National News every winter for being the coldest place in the country!! I learnt to drive in the snow!
As long as I have warm clothing I love it!
It's the idiots on the road I don't like. Or the fact that I couldn't get to work yesterday and today as I couldn't get my car off the drive! Even if i had there were several cars stranded along my road due to the icy surface!
So hopefully if this weather does continue then the councils will get wise to it and the roads will be OK and life will return to normal - of sorts...

We get a meal provided each day at work, the other day they gave us leftovers from breakfast, so I made a sausage butty and a bacon butty, the commotion this caused was unbelievable, they are still laughing about how gross it was?? Very odd people.

I also like the weather BUT:

1, The Yorkshireman within me (that's what she said) begrudges having to pay for higher heating bills

2, I'm lazy and don't like exerting myself just to be able to drive my car

3, I'm lazy and it's tiring work walking on ice and snow

4, I'm pretty sure this whole "winter wonderland" will wear thin after a while

5, I work from home most of the time so i can't have a "snow day" like the rest of the country

Oh, no offence DandNHill but i did chuckle at the fact that you wrote about how you hate idiots on the road and your next sentence stated you couldn't even get your car off your drive. It's a good job that wasn't part of your driving test :p

In response to the first 2 comments, think of it as an alternative to the gym!!

I also work from home on and off so I have had to work over the last couple of days, juggling two over excited boys who want me to go out in the garden with them and don't understand that "Mum has to work!"

And last point, I would be able to get the car out with a shovel but am enjoying having to walk instead. In my village the road has been transformed in to a very large footpath, which somehow gives it a real community feel! "We all need to stick together in these trying times!"
