The difference between Linked In and Facebook in my opinion is that increasingly, professionally, you need to have a public, Linked In profile. Facebook for me at least, is about privately sharing stuff with friends/family. Of course you can, as many do, choose to live your life publically on FB and share the selfies, drunken ramblings and minutae of your life will all. But you'd be an idiot or a millennial to do so.;)
Linkedin is useful. I get lots of work-related emails from people I've never heard of. Linkedin is my first port of call. I work on the assumption that, if the person is connected to someone I know well, the due diligence has been done for me. |

I tend to avoid the people who want to connect with me that have over 500+ contacts already. They won't miss you if you don't connect with them. |

I had a stalker.
Not connected to the internet, just some random guy that saw me and apparently fell in love with me (that's what he told the police). It was quite scary at the time, actually, still makes my pulse race when I think about it, but the whole experience made me a bit more cautious about what I do online and about how I act in the street. One of the reasons I was happy to be moving to Canada. |
