I have no use for Facebook. I use email or the phone (neither of which cost me a cent).

Linkedin is useful. I get lots of work-related emails from people I've never heard of. Linkedin is my first port of call. I work on the assumption that, if the person is connected to someone I know well, the due diligence has been done for me.

Oh I'm sure there is some facebook group for paintroller nipple abusers that you'd profit from joining.

Agree largely about LI and people that are connected to someone you know but it's not an infallible rule. I received a network request from some random marketing person that was linked to a former colleague of mine today. I didn't need to participate in "a virtual community of whatever" which is what their profile talked about so hit the big X button instead.

Look, pal, I have not been near a paint roller for over a decade.

I recall a few years ago the inference that if you were applying for a job and you didn't have facebook that it was a big strike against you and that the employer thought you had something to hide.

You've encapsulated facebook perfectly with its selfies, drunken ramblings and minutae.

I'm guilty of that as well. I'm linkedin with a guy from a headhunting firm and he posts a lot of crap and likes etc, 99.9% of which I'm not interested in. Most of it is self serving hot air.

I tend to avoid the people who want to connect with me that have over 500+ contacts already. They won't miss you if you don't connect with them.

Re: Internet Forums & Stalking....

I had a stalker.

Not connected to the internet, just some random guy that saw me and apparently fell in love with me (that's what he told the police). It was quite scary at the time, actually, still makes my pulse race when I think about it, but the whole experience made me a bit more cautious about what I do online and about how I act in the street.

One of the reasons I was happy to be moving to Canada.
