Internet Forums & Stalking....
#31
On the evening of that September 11th, I had planned to meet a bunch of posters from the internet and then to crash at the home of a poster called JerseyGirl. The meetup was to be in Lower Manhattan and was postponed because a plane fell on it. When it was rescheduled JerseyGirl was elsewhere and missed it.
That was a shame because JerseyGirl turned out to be an utter nutcase. She fell out with another poster, a university professor, found out his real address (he posted using his actual name) and began enrolling him in political organisations and ordering goods and services in his name. She then moved on to doing the same to his wife and eventually turned up at the university.
After meeting hundreds of people from the internet I would have liked to have met at least one stereotypical lunatic (I think the Montana Miltiaman was an atypical lunatic).

Well I never!?
To be honest Facebook was invented for stalking the opposite sex. How do you think it got to 1 billion people so fast?

I tend to feel relatively safe here on BE & the only other board(s - 2 of 'em) I post to regularly. Some people know here & there who I am in Real Life; I'm not too hard to find, really.
I buttoned down Fbook, & changed the pattern of my user names online, a couple of years ago after 2 rather unpleasant incidents which could be classed as stalking:
1. Someone who had a beef with a person with the same name as me, from the same area, DID actually turn up on my doorstep, breathing fire.
2. Some weirdo tracked one of my children via me, through Fbook.
Both incidents were resolved very fast.
Years & years ago (think Usenet), I got some offline, in-person, hassle resulting from someone tracking/stalking my online persona.

If the stalker is female, good looking with a hot body, looking for sex and shows up at my door nekkid carrying a shepherds pie and a bottle of rum then stalk away if not then I prefer to remain as anonymous as I can.

I'm so glad I have a really really common name and all the others with my name are waaaaaaaaaay more accomplished than me. My mediocrity keeps me safe.
as for kids, i chose to scare the crap out of mine by showing her what's online about people. the rule is - would you want to invite this person into your home? if not, don't talk to them on the webz.

It got too much by the 7th straight night and I had to boot her and warn the concierges.
Toronto is the capital of crazy stalkers. They don't put that on their liveability indexes.

This thread has been useful as it has prompted me to delete my Facebook account that I set up when it was still steam powered. My last visit was in 2008!

Based on what some posters here have said about themselves it isn't too hard to figure out who is who.

i used to be quite traceable on the web through usernames etc, but I tightened everything down recently
I searched myself under my own name, and my usual online handles, and apart from my linkedin display picture, a couple of instagram likes and some old car pictures...i'm not very identifiable imo

Some university professors on this board are even employed where some posters children are in attendance. And yes, rate my prof can be quite enlightening.

It's a bit worrying with kids. They are growing up in a world where privacy almost does not exist, and so they are willing participants. The tech companies constantly chip away at privacy and are funnelling everyone into large social networks. I think it's only the young or famous that are at risk of being stalked.
The other sister really doesn't care and lets her kids post all over the internet and from what I can tell on FB, doesn't monitor them a whole lot.
I am in the generation that sorta kinda had internet, it was around but not really mainstream and more of a novelty still (teen in the early to mid 90's) and schools hadn't even gone online yet, and school work was done the old fashioned way from books, and the highlight of the internet seemed to be webcams of fish bowls and chat boards, so I have no experience being a kid and having internet around, or a computer, my parents never bought one.. I bought my own at 20.
