Does anyone know if we would need medical insurance when we go to the UK for 2 weeks at xmas.

I beleive so yes, as you are no longer "resident" in the UK, then you need travel insurance.
Of course, if you needed treatment and went to the local A&E and gave, for example, your parents address, would they know??

Is it worth the risk. We have an annual family policy for trips up to 5 weeks. Costs around $85
