Re: I saw a Wolf and it was massive!
Next time someone posts about seeing a massive wolf...we will just have to say that Greentea saw it first

I'm pretty certain that there is no "giant wolf" breed that has managed to evade science until greentea happened upon it. Still, I've no doubt that the wolf they saw was impressive - I've only seen one and at first I thought it was a dog (am still not 100% sure now)

According to the wiki, they can grow to 3 ft high and 5 ft long. I imagine seeing one walk pass you might well make you think he was 5 ft high.
I know when I watched a mother grizzly walk pass us while we watched from the bus window in Alaska I thought she was giantic. |

Hi again,
The wolves that you see around Peterborough On may well be the size of dogs however, where we saw the gigantic one and yes, around 5 foot tall too was a 23 hour drive north west from Peterborough On, so well away from big towns and populated areas. Just because we are told that an animal (dog/wolf/horse/moose etc,) should be a certain height/weight/characteristic etc, doesn't always mean that every single animal in the world is going to be that way. I'm sure it was big, and a wonderful thing to see, but... 5 foot tall is the size of a horse, a 15 hand horse. |

I am pretty sure I saw a 3 foot housecat on my way to work this morning but the sun was shinning in my eyes. ;) In all seriousnes though, it is sometimes hard to get a good estimate on size when you are overwhelmed/overjoyed/ in awe/ of seeing something you don't get to see everyday. Especially a wild animal in it's natural habitat.

Little Green Tea and the Big Bad Wolf. Sorry, couldn't resist Greentea :)
This is the tallest dog in the world measuring 43 inches at the shoulder. 5ft=60 inches. |
Re: I saw a Wolf and it was massive!
I thought I might have to eat humble pie when the Boreal Forest website gave the size as 5 foot, but then they also say a chipmunk is 12" and a raccoon 3'. They must mean length, the thought of a 3' tall raccoon is very scary
Still, it must have been a fascinating drive and great to see a wolf in that habitat. |

Hi everyone,
This was my first experience of seeing Canadian wildlife, after setting off towards MB for a recce trip. We set off from a place called Dryden early in the morning and saw this great big thing just plodding across the road. It was gigantic and considering the images of wolves that I've had before thinking they were dog size but this thing was huge. I swear it was 5 foot! in fact, when we first saw it we were like 'what the heck was that' because we thought they were only dog size. It was also on its own which makes me think it could have been kicked out of the pack. Has anyone else seen these before - I'd love to hear more about them and feel quite humbled that I got to see him. I looked it up on the net and it appears to be a Timber wolf. http://www.vancouversun.com/group+us...936/story.html |
