How Rich Are You ?
That's the title of the article below. No need to answer !!;)
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/b...h-are-you.html It's a succinct little table and if you times it by 1.6X or 1.8X or 2.0X it probably converts for Canada too. |
Re: How Rich Are You ?
Bloody Telegraph - blocks me - and I refuse to subscribe. How rich am I then?

Re: How Rich Are You ?
Doesn't seem right to me at all. According to that chart, we were on the 9th level in the UK, but that income certainly didn't make us rich. I was very comfortable in our 3bed semi and didn't want to move- which was good as we couldn't afford the next rung on the ladder. We had to watch money carefully...although I appreciate our fortunate position.
Ooh I've just had a thought is that meant to be after tax? I could move down several rungs if so:) |

Re: How Rich Are You ?
using that chart and converting our household income for 2013 into pounds, we fall into the bottom category.

Nor has anyone else. I was rather pleased with the bilingual compound noun, so I asked my nonsensically intelligent trilingual son (sitting in the next room over, playing some sort of video thingy) if I'd coined a new word.

Re: How Rich Are You ?
I believe it to be the case that both of my working children are in the top 10%, one in the UK, one in Canada. Are they rich? Give over, even with funding for one degree each, they have each have massive student debt from subsequent qualifications. Maybe most people earning the incomes shown at the top of the scale are rich but it's not because of the income so much as the fact that coming from money makes you more likely to have a high income.

Signed, A Broke Guy. I understand your dilemma. The fundamental flaw in the Torygraph (can I say it again, oh, please:), lumpen-bourgoisie shit, is that being rich is not directly (or even vaguely) connected to income. A Smug Liberal. |

More money more problems.

To me someone making 100k GBP (184k CAD apparently) is rather rich in my eyes, but to someone else, it might not be. |

But back on thread as Oakvillian points out above dependents kill wealth. I have an Uncle who as top surgeon should be immensely wealthy but two divorces (both stay at home wives) and three kids well and truly buggered that. The final factor is simply man's ability to live within his means. I earn twice what I earned 6 years ago but spend twice on my rent and costs so the net gain is eradicated for my own perceived self improvement. Assets are a measure of wealth. Income is merely a tool to get there if used correctly. |

Quite the opposite, I think. The more children one has, the more one needs to earn to consider oneself richer than a given percentage of one's peers. A singleton earning 40k would be in the 90th percentile of earnings; a sole-breadwinner for a couple with two children, on the same salary, would be only in about the 45th percentile of earnings for 2-child families.
But as was noted in a thread yonks ago, the production of children does tend incentivise more work and (in theory) asset accumulation! |

I find that table a bit bemusing.
We are at the top of that table. Where does all the sodding money go? |

Re: How Rich Are You ?
There is a difference between "rich" and being in the "top (richest) decile"
If my wife and I were earning the equivalent of 88k GBP (guessing that's in the $140k range?) between us we'd likely feel pretty well off. |
