Make sure whatever boots you buy have a good tread on them so you remain upright as much as possible.
As for other clothes I find layers of t-shirts and cardies under a warm coat are best as when you get inside the over heated buildings you end up a sweaty nasty heap of redness and steam. Get a pashmina from John Lewis to wrap around your head and neck, and a warm hat to go over that. Mittens, not gloves will keep your hands warmer. |

Unless you really have a good source of winter clothes in the UK that can stand Canadian winters, don't bother until you get here. Just buy a few layers to survive until you can get some suitable stuff. Very important is a good pair of waterproof and cold proof boots and some of those metal ice grips for walking on ice (otherwise a twisted ankle is more or less guaranteed one day).
