We've replaced all the carpet in this house with wood or ceramic (except the basement stairs, we put sisal on those). That it's cleaner is shockingly obvious when beating any of the rugs. A poster mentioned buying shag carpet recently (buying it recently, not a horror story from the distant past recently recalled). I assume it was for the side of the bath and have been picturing her grimy, soggy tufts whenever offered a cheese and pineapple skewer or a prawn cocktail.

They've already arrived in France too. It was dbd33's mention of baths which triggered this thought. Our house there has a hideous 1970's pink bathtub which I'll never change because it's the most comfortable bathtub I've ever come across. Bliss it is.

Oh that's brought back a memory!
I have just got my 'wood floor' and I love it. For the last 15 years or so I've had brick ceramic, which were a local craze. After the ceramic, the wood is great, warm and much more giving. I have, and have had, rugs. I couldn't live with wall to wall carpet, I'm too clumsy, and so are my son and husband, to say nothing of the animals. Carpets smell. You can't beat them and they harbour all sorts of beasts, I think of ticks and fleas...(from the animials, not us I add!) also mice, mice pee and poop everywhere constantly, and certainly I've had problems with them in the past and I don't believe Canada will be different. I like lino in the kitchen and bathroom, or they call it something else now, but it's still lino.

Bathrooms though are tiled (in one instance in marble, not my idea either).

Sometimes its cheaper to buy Canadian lumber in the US. All exotic hardwoods are imported though.
