I never heard of of East India either.
Until I realised it does not exist unless your in Canada/USA and amongst the 'East Indian' community'. 
I never heard of the term (east Indian) until I was told to use it otherwise people would think the reference is to native Indians.
It gets better though. Another term is 'brown people'. i.e Surrey in Vancouver is full of 'brown people'. When I first heard it I was like 'WTF..?!!!'
The term Asian is not used either is its more related to oriental people... I could go on..
But hey, when in Rome, do as the Romans do...

I hear ya....youa re not alone on that one. Asian folks (as you and I know it from the UK) in Brampton and Mississauga would tell you they are BROWN

Make no mistake, this behaviour might be rife with certain group of people, but a lot of Eastern Europeans, Italians and Portuguese folks are in on it too, just to mention a few.
Some Brits on here probably won't admit that they came via that route
