I have a craving for a proper homemade rice pudding, you know like the one your Mum makes with nutmeg and raisins and a skin on the top!
Problem is I can't find short grain rice anywhere here. Tried the regular grocery stores, T & T Chinese Suopermarket and also a Middle Eastern Grocer and nowhere seems to stock it or anything resembling it.
There was something called "sweet rice" in T & T but it was long grain. Rice Pudding recipes here call for long grain or basmati
Just wondering if a short grain like arborio would work but don't want to end up with an al dente risotto type pud.
Any bright ideas please?

We (me and my daughter that is) love rice pudding too. I make in the slow cooker! Anyway, yes you can buy the right rice here - it's called Short Grain Pearl Rice and you can buy it in Safeways for sure - it's their own brand that I have. Yummy!

I use any kind of risotto rice, the japanese sushi rice or the sticky rice... all seem to work well for rice pud. they all have that slightly glutinous aspect that short-grain rice has.
And seeing as I make sushi, risotto and sticky rice a lot, I usually have all of these in the house most of the time. If I have run out and am forced to cook basmati or long grain I just cook it for longer - it will breakdown and go to the right consistency eventually - lets face it, the chinese staple of congee (rice porridge) is nothing more than over cooked rice with various flavourings...

I use this one too and in the slow cooker, it is yum! I've a feeling it's with the baking section.. where they had the semolina etc.. well was in ours. I've also bought tinned rice pudding made by Safeway and it was rather good.
