Default High School question.

Hi all.
Am hoping emigrants can answer this for me...
We have just been informed that the O/H has been successful in getting a job in the GTA area.
Now, my youngest is 15 and due to sit her GCSEs next May and wee would like to hang on in the UK until they are complete.
How would she be accomodated within the Onatario education system. Would she be expected to repeat a year in order to settle in or go straight into 11th grade?
How does the High School diploma work and would GCSEs count towards it?
Any recommended websites, as I can't find any that clearly answer all my questions.
Thank you in anticipation.
Pincher.

The basic question, I think, is whether you intend your 15 yr old to complete secondary education in Ontario. (i.e. in part are you all coming on PR or TWP?).

If the move is permanent, I see no point in delaying until the GCSE's are done. She'll go into the appropriate grade for this school year and get her diploma on schedule after 12th grade. You should contact the School Board to check this.

I don't know where in the GTA you're heading, but if you tell me I can post a relevant link.

I don't mean to sound harsh but why would you move when your child is at such a critical stage in her life? Is your situation such that you couldn't wait three or four years? Wouldn't it be better to sacrifice your personal ambitions just for a bit?

We will be coming over on PRs.
The O/H place of work will be in Vaughan, north GTA, so I guess we will look to settle in this area.
Thanks very much.

We've been planning to emigrate for years now. This offer came out of the blue and includes a full relocation package. We'd be nuts to turn it down.
It's not a case of blindly packing up. I'm just considering what our options are.

Hello I was the same age as your youngest when my family emigrated to Canada from the UK. We moved over in May, so I ended up not doing my GCSE's. I started high school in the september in grade 11 and ended up graduating with my grade 12 diploma and then going onto college. That was 28 years ago. I know that my school placed me in a higher stream (there are two streams in Canadian high schools, one for kids going onto uni and the other for college or work after school). This was based on the fact that I had come from the UK school system.

I have done the exact thing to my 15 year olds here, moved from Canada to Australia, luckily for us the Aussie system is almost identical to the Canadian system.

Good luck with the move, it's a tough age to move the kids over when they are that age, but we have been in oz almost a year now, and our 15 year olds are now starting to settle.

Cheers

Karen
