Happy St. Patrick's Day

Well it's not St. Patrick's Day in Calgary yet, but it is in the British Isles, so

Happy St. Patrick's Day

to everyone of Irish descent, to all people named Patrick, Patricia, Pat, Patty, Trish, Paddy, and to anyone else who feels like accepting the wish.

I must say I have never noticed it celebrated in England, so it's nice that people do here!

Slainte!!!!

"The Catholic Church moved St Patrick's Day 2008 after discovering it clashed with a key day in the Church's calendar."

They moved it to 15th March, weird really but Happy St Patrick's Day anyhow

Here in the "Jaw", we will be celebrating on the 17th as always. Me and my wee band are in the CHAB studio's from 7am till 9am, then 1pm-4pm at the Timothy Eatons Center, followed by 5pm to 8pm at Bobbys Place. Now seeing as that is such a long day, do you suppose I might be entitled to a wee one or three sometime this evening?
Slainte! to yez all!! indeed.

Neither me nor any of the girls at work are irish (though I think if anyone looked hard enough they could find a trace element of celtic blood in their dog or something) But we are dressing up in the spirit of things anyway - pictures will be posted on photobucket tommorow!

Re: Happy St. Patrick's Day

The St. Patrick's Day stuff over here really gets my goat.

I don't consider myself to be remotely Irish, despite the fact that I'm Catholic and have Irish Catholic ancestors up the wazoo, and that my Step-Dad is 100% Paddy (even with the first name of Patrick).

One of my friends ancestors probably flew over Ireland at some point, or had a shamrock waved at her. As a result of very tenuous claims on ancestry, she got a clover leaf tattoo, and loudly proclaims that she is Irish to anyone who will remotely listen. She is in fact, more Irish than me. Despite the fact that actually my Irish ancestry (not just Step-Father of Irishness) is more recent than hers. For ages I thought that her Dad or something was Irish. But No. Her family is actually French Canadian!

This really really p's me off. :curse::curse::curse::curse: I mean, just what is supposed to be so special about being Irish...

As for St. Patrick's day, the day when North Americans the world over loudly proclaim that their second cousin three times removed had a great grandfather who was Irish. Well really! I find the whole thing totally ridiculous!

And breathe!!!!!

I think this time last year there was a thread about the plastic paddy syndrome, and I too am not overly sure why many would chase you down the street to tell you that they are Irish somewhere down the line.

Maybe there is a special club that you go to when you die if you can prove tenuous links to kissing the Blarney Stone or something.

I do find some things quite laughable though - as though some need to find something to 'belong' to. As a quick aside a friend of mine here has just got her Méti (sp?) status - and all you hear her say is "I'll get a share of the land that white man stole from us, and I don't have to pay taxes (probably of more benefit if you had a job there dear!) and my kids get free education etc etc etc. Before this pice of paper no-one had a clue about her links to the first nations, now all it is about is what she can get for it.

How about just being proud of your heritage - wherever you hail from without throwing it down peoples throats in an attempt gain some form of identity because you can't be bothered to work on your own

Or better, still, how about being proud of things you have some control over, rather than random accidents of birth?

My OH's family in Montreal are all of Irish decent and are so proud to be Irish. FWIW I'm from Northern Ireland and was brought up Catholic. I remember saying to my MIL that I thought it was a little silly to be proud of being Irish as it's just an accident of birth and nothing more I don't think they were very impressed with me.

(agree with Bazzz on this one.)

Know what you mean Pretty Flowers - the amount of people here in my town in SK when they hear my accent in the place I work, are all suddenly Irish - at the start I used to be dumb and say "Oh are you from Ireland" but it was always their great - great grandfather twice removed's cousin etc etc was born in Ireland in the 1600's (well i may be slightly exaggerating but you know what I mean).

Also they have all been sooo ecxited this past week to know how I will be celebrating Paddy's Day - pointless trying to explain the complicated I'm a Protestant from N.I therefore I am British so dont celebrate Paddy's Day- and they have all been shocked when I say I'm painting my living room.

My uncle lives in Australia (he's been there over 30 years) and I think out of all our family he probably celebrates St. Patrick's Day the most as he sings and plays bass in an Irish Band. The funny thing is he's originally an Northern Irish Protestant and was even a member of the Apprentice Boys before he moved to OZ.;)

Really? I hadn't noticed anyone mentioning Jesus in relation to Christmas for a long time. I don't think many people are really into the whole "son of god" thing anymore.

Absolutely, I think I would feel more inclined to give someone a pat (scuse the pun) on the back for doing something they have had to work at rather than for having distant relatives who wore green, sat on mushrooms and played the fiddle.

Now - I am not saying I hate the Irish / welsh / Israels or anything tbh I couldn't give a f**k if you came from the moon, but how do these people want me to answer the old

"Oooooh my great grandfathers dog was Irish"

So What, you want a medal or something!!!!!

We have found it a lot over here, when you are asked where you are from, you reply "Insert country" then the answer is inevitably - "I have family from there", you say "Oh really where abouts?", they normally say "I'm not sure"

AAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrghhhhhh

What is the best they hope can happen here???? What do you want us to say

"Oh good lets be mates then!" :curse:

Sorry it winds me up

Sad really - after all that is the real meaning behind Christmas to celebrate the birth of the "Son of God".

Re: Happy St. Patrick's Day

Well I just got back from my kids school and one of the teachers ws dressed like a Lephrecan.. There were Shamrocks everywhere!!

God I went to a Girls Catholic Convent School in London, i'd say 60% of the school was Irish or Irish decent and we NEVER celebrated like that!! A few of us used to come in with a little spig of real shamrock our Nanny's from Ireland had sent us.. That was about the extent of it! (the fact that we wore Bottle Green uniforms covered most bases :sneaky: )

We have a running joke in our Family about my 'Irishness'.. Its a good debate.. what actually dictates our 'Irishness' ??

Both my parents were born in Ireland, 5 of my 10 brothers and sisters were born in ireland... 90% of my Family are still in Ireland. BUT I was born and grew up in England.. Am I English or Irish..

My cousins say i'm english until I change my passport to an Irish one!! One of my cousins was born in England but my aunt and uncle decided to go back to Ireland, so he grew up there... Is he English or Irish.. ??

I think some feel its where they are born.. some where their Heritage derives from.. Its whatever you wanna feel...

Me.. I feel its Geography where your born, and Heritage is who you are... I love England and I love my Irish Heritage, I think I can have a bit of both... I'm a bit greedy like that :p
