Complaceny. They may think they are teaching people to have respect for guns, but in reality they are teaching them the opposite. Familiarity breeds...

As I have said before, there is no need for anyone, outside of military, to have access to automatic weapons. I cannot think of any credible reason why anyone would believe it appropriate to put such a weapon into the hands of someone so incapable of being able to control it.

Yes. And 2 lives were destroyed at that range.

When the children did scouts in Calgary the meetings were held at one of the shooting ranges from time to time. I think they used AK47s and Uzis there.

In my scout troop in the '60s we took our own .22 rifles to camp with us to get our shooting badges and go rabbit hunting. Sometimes I'd bring dad's old single shot 12 ga and they'd let me explore the coulees up and down the valley (technically illegal since I was supposed to be accompanied by a 16 year old). Best scout troop ever.

This one was okay though as he was a firearms instructor and it happened safely on a firing range.

Omg I just read the grandmother article. What on god's earth was she thinking? Her immediate thought was burglar not grandchild. Did she live somewhere really rough? I can't begin to imagine how you'd feel as the parent?

I read some stupid comment on the BBC news coverage of the 9yr old girl....saying that the episode was just the media trying to drum up outrage for anti-gun legislation. Err no, it's just reporting a needless death! She will carry that death with her for the rest of her life as will his family.

Forget the rough area, what happened to logic? She puts the chair against the door. On the inside.

She's obviously not shutting the kids outside her room so they must be inside with her. And she hears the chair moving on the floor inside.

If she can reach for a gun, why not the light switch? Not to mention the gun must have been readily accessible to the kids too.

Ooh missed the inside/outside references! Still crazy...perhaps she's blaming some sleep disorder and therefore not the guns fault at all:(
