I love it how we (the Welsh) lay claim to the origins of all that is great and good. My dad, a diehard nationalist from North Wales, banged on about how Elvis' ancestors came from West Wales to much ridicule but apparently there might be some truth in it.

Did any Welsh men/women invent anything important? Just asking because I don't know.

PeterF Jun 17th 2012 8:54 am

Re: Great things that came from Wales...

Don't know about inventing, but the Tudor's were Welsh.

Then there was Welshman Richard Williams (or Richard ap William as it would have been), who ended up as Sir Richard Williams and lived in Huntington.

Henry VIII thought the Welsh 'ap' thing would go against him and persuaded him to go under his brother-in-law, Thomas Cromwell's surname. His great grandson Oliver, then helped remove a future king.

The Roman's referred to the Welsh as Breton's and the Breton land included Merseyside, Cumbria and South West Scotland.

Damn! I was going to say the exact same thing but you beat me to it!! Yes, the Welsh invented a church borne from the desires of a randy old Welsh goat.

According to my father, and other like minded nationalists, we also invented oxygen, fire, motorways and close harmony singing

Apart from the Welsh connection, aren't all churches started that way?

I think not. I2C may relax into my gentle arms. As long as you know who is in the loo. Not a moment longer.

Michael Sheen went to the same school as me, unfortunately a few years after me. Anthony Hopkins was from a different part of the same town, so went to a different school, quite a few years before me and Richard Burton came from a village just outside town.

Mary Hopkin, oh yes, those were the days.

Christian Bale was born welsh but believe brought up in London.

There is of course William Frost from Tenby who designed and flew a powered flying machine a whole 8 years before the Wright brothers.
