re: Great Britain's Future - post Brexit
I honestly don't know what to think except I have noticed that on social media everyone seems to have strong opinions, in or out. I guess that really everyone wants a good outcome from the UK so they agree on the destination.....

re: Great Britain's Future - post Brexit
The biggest thing for me was the huge generational divide. I can see a lot of young Brits (35 and under) opting to leave the UK for Europe or elsewhere. I have noticed there had been a lot of 'want to move to Canada' post from young brits on the forum. I am expecting this to increase in the next few days.
I honestly believe the UK has taken a huge step back. |

re: Great Britain's Future - post Brexit
Turkeys have just voted for Christmas.
The Law of Unintended Consequences has already started to apply. I wonder how many 'protest voters' woke up this morning and regretted what they had done? The younger generation have been sold down the river by the over 50s and particularly the pensioners. The majority of people who have only lived in the EU voted to keep it. Those with senile dementia and higher racist tendencies voted to leave. Maybe David Cameron should reduce the state pension and use the money to increase child benefit as his last hurrah.... Now to join the Conservative Party to see if that gives me the right to try and end Boris's political career.... |

re: Great Britain's Future - post Brexit
One of the best quotes I saw was from Noel Gallagher:
"Do I think we should leave? I don't think we should be given a vote. I see politicians on TV every night telling us that this is a ****ing momentous decision that could ****ing change Britain forever and blah, blah, blah. It's like, okay, why don't you ****ing do what we pay you to do which is run the ****ing country and make your ****ing mind up? "What are you asking the people for? 99 per cent of the people are thick as pig shit." |

The one thing this vote really demonstrates is how much the left hate democracy (not to mention the 'uneducated' working class). It's great so long as people vote their way, but should be ignored whenever anyone votes wrong. |

re: Great Britain's Future - post Brexit
The most amazing if that is the correct word about this vote is Wales... Net gainers from Europe to the tune of 4 BILLION POUNDS lowest amount of migration in the UK... And now Wales wants to re negotiate the barnet agreement with Westminster / the political classes which mostly wanted to remain!!!!!
Personally i think the Welsh may just be headed back down the mines but without a head torch. |
re: Great Britain's Future - post Brexit
As this doesn't fix anything (it may worsen a lot, lets see) the biggest question is how to fix a divided England. I've no doubt Scotland secedes and rejoins; in hindsight they got it wrong last time. NI could plausible get interested in reunification.
But England is split between a wealthy, educated, global elite in the cities and a traditional, nostalgic folk inn the countryside. The London Secedes article now has a whole lot more relevance.. |

So, per my comment to magnumpy the other day about FB (his friends were all leave, my friends were all remain) my FB feed this morning is full of friends figuring out which EU passports they might qualify for.

I'm so upset. I don't know what to say except I'm in tune with most of the comments on this thread. Too shocked to say more except what a huge mistake.
I watched the YouTube clip by Prof Michael Dougan before vote a few days ago. Did anyone else see that? S |

re: Great Britain's Future - post Brexit
It's 5-10 years of turmoil for Britain and Europe. A second Scottish referendum within a year, tensions resurface in Northern Ireland (Sinn Fein has already proposed re-unification) Wales will lack EU, foreign and (probably) British investment. Inflation. EU itself will be near breaking point dealing with Greek financial crisis (without UK contribution) migrant crisis and emboldened eurosceptic factions in other member states. Workers rights will erode as Britain strives for flexibility to compete with Asia. Young people's opportunity cut (as above) old people no longer enjoy the right to retire in the sun. Closer ties and widening opportunities with Eastern Europe curtailed. All in all, quite rosy.

Yes, I think quite a lot of people saw that. The trouble is that he is an "expert" and in Brave New Britain you can't trust experts. What do they know?
We've had quite a few overnight inquiries from friends/acquaintances/family about immigrating to Canada. The only other passport I might be able to get is a British one issued in Gibraltar (my mum was born there) but that won't help me with Europe. S |

re: Great Britain's Future - post Brexit
Oh for goodness sake..
Why do people generalise and belittle because the vote didn't go the way they hoped? Why does it concern them so much of the age, education, employment or otherwise of those that voted to leave - don't they think there were an (almost) equal amount of people with a similar background who voted remain? Stop pointing the finger because others dissagreed! IMHO, people were just fed up to the back teeth of not having control over their own country any longer. Regardless, the deed is done. Time to move on and move forwards. |

I think this was a flat out protest vote; in part against the "experts" as mentioned above

Democratic rights are premised on informed voters, very few voters were sufficiently informed to make this choice. It's akin to asking the general public if we should go to war, instinct and prejudice will prevail over analysis and reason. It's madness that Cameron succumbed to Farage's taunts and granted the referendum.
