Default "Gotten"

Why does everyone use this word so much now. Except for certain specific contexts it sounds ****ing retarded even when septics say it, let alone civilized people. It's gotten to the point where I want to stab people in the eye with a fork when they say it, let alone write it down.

Been used as far as my memory goes back, I haven't noticed an increase in it's use.

Seems to be mostly used in North America though now.

That's a great link. It sums up my snarky feeling of superiority exactly.

I too detest this word which even my own children throw into their conversation with abandon. The silly thing is you can always substitute the simpler word GOT so why use GOTTEN. I have given up trying to correct its use. There are better things to worry about and in the end there are those of us who simply have a superior level of speaking and we know who we are - haha.

Your feeling of superiority is simply that - a feeling.

This along with the Brit penchant to use the word pressurized instead of pressured when referring to putting pressure on someone to do something or make a decision.

Another one is the use of "then" when the person using it clearly means "than".

There now I feel superior too.

Maybe you lot just hang around with the wrong people

Never heard a Brit say that mate.

Never come across that either. Perhaps question of accents?

Used consistantly on Brit TV shows. Even heard "Judge John Deed" say it from the bench in one show.

I see people complaining about this one over and over, but never hear anyone saying it.

I have a suspicion that it is a typo, seen in written language, as I have found myself doing it a few times (dont know why as the e and a are not adjacent)
