"Gotten"
Why does everyone use this word so much now. Except for certain specific contexts it sounds ****ing retarded even when septics say it, let alone civilized people. It's gotten to the point where I want to stab people in the eye with a fork when they say it, let alone write it down.

Re: "Gotten"
Been used as far as my memory goes back, I haven't noticed an increase in it's use.
Seems to be mostly used in North America though now. Got vs. gotten - Grammarist |
Re: "Gotten"
That's a great link. It sums up my snarky feeling of superiority exactly.
|
Re: "Gotten"
I too detest this word which even my own children throw into their conversation with abandon. The silly thing is you can always substitute the simpler word GOT so why use GOTTEN. I have given up trying to correct its use. There are better things to worry about and in the end there are those of us who simply have a superior level of speaking and we know who we are - haha.

Re: "Gotten"
Your feeling of superiority is simply that - a feeling.
|
Re: "Gotten"
Don't care. Feel superior.
|
Re: "Gotten"
Yup, hate gotten. On par with 'sat' ("he was sat at his desk all morning").

Another one is the use of "then" when the person using it clearly means "than". There now I feel superior too. |
Re: "Gotten"
I honestly can't say I have ever heard that word spoken where I live or doing my job which puts me into contact with people from all over.
Maybe you lot just hang around with the wrong people  |

This along with the Brit penchant to use the word pressurized instead of pressured when referring to putting pressure on someone to do something or make a decision.

I have a suspicion that it is a typo, seen in written language, as I have found myself doing it a few times (dont know why as the e and a are not adjacent) |
Re: "Gotten"
Having thought about this all day and wondering if Im missing out on something the only plausible way I might use this word is in the following
Its gotten to the point where I want to divorce that cow or something similar. |

Its gotten to the point where I want to divorce that cow or something similar. I find it irritating when people put "at" at the end of a sentence. As in "where's the fire extinguisher at?" It might just be a septic thing. |
Re: "Gotten"
I hear that a lot. I could care less about it though.

Re: "Gotten"
I was in a resto once and there was some frenchies at the next table and one of them actually said "good moaning" like in allo allo.

Re: "Gotten"
I rather like the affected French accent.

Re: "Gotten"
Gotten and addicting are very small ticket items, especially when compared to the use of "inquiry" over "enquiry".
The authorities should stop ******* the dog and investigate this. They won't, of course, they're too busy spending their ill-gotten gains. |
