Google Feedback (maps)

:frown::frown::frown:

Has anyone seen Google maps recently?

All I want is to see where a place is in relation to other places and to see places within a particular area.

But now they've got #!&$% boxes every #!&$% where about photos, terrain and journey and I can't #!&$% see what I want to see and there doesn't seem to be any #!&$% way to close the #!&$% things.

If you want photos there is already the images feature. Journeys can be had elsewhere and I imagine terrain is a minority interest and those interested are probably well catered to already.

I tried to send feedback. But once a comment was entered there's no #!&$% 'send' button to send the comments.

I went to the other google feedback button, made my comments there and there was no #!&$% 'send' button there either.

Does anyone know how the #!&$% one makes comments to Google?

I know exactly what you mean. Google Maps used to be so useable, but in their quest to make everything idiot-proof and supply a bit if advertising some of the functionality is stripped out.

Don't waste your time even thinking about complaining to Google (or any internet company).

I feel the same way, it should have been left alone.
I tried some of the tabs in the bottom right hand corner and, somehow, I had a box come up where you could reset back to the previous version and then save it for the future.

It's the Lite Mode you click on on the very bottom of the map, it takes you to another page and you need to click on Lite Mode again to go back to the old system.

No 3D or Google Earth availability on Lite Mode though.

I found a way to complain via "my account" as there was actually a 'send' button to click there.

Tried using the new maps, put in point of origin, takes that OK, put in a destinations and it send me somewhere completely different to where I wanted to go.

Back to Mapquest maybe? It was still slightly wrong, but closer than Google maps.

The bit that always hacks me off is when I ask for directions to somewhere and I get some advertisers idea of where I should go! There is a Cheverolet dealership near me that shoots details of their address on my every request....I shall NEVER buy a Cheverolet now:thumbdown:

Try going to https://maps.google.co.uk ... Worked for me. When trying to use Google Maps canada (maps.google.ca) it took me to the new one. .co.uk is still on the old one it seems :)

I'll be pleased when Google Streetview gets a bit faster so that you can drive around streets doing a virtual recce in the same way you would in a car. Maybe you can already do this on higher powered machines?

Still, it's a far cry from how it was back in the dark ages of the internet (ten years ago).

I'm pretty sure you can already do this once you have planned a route.

I think they may have paid attention to me.

I followed the suggestion made by Inse and selected the previous version.

There was a little survey as to why I was expressing that preference and a multiple choice option included what I had said in my complaint.

Of course it might be that they were doing this anyway, but I suspect they might have used something more techie sounding rather than the basic "old people" expression I used.

The new version is a lot more intensive on the computer you use. If it's a bit older or weaker the whole interface runs like treacle. On a newer PC it's not too bad.

It wasn't the speed, or page loading, it was just all those damn boxes offering features that if I wanted to use, I wouldn't be opening Maps. And then not closing when I wanted to reject them and just look at the damn map.

I'm happy to say that since I went back to the original version I don't recall a specific box, just boxes.

I hate the way google just keeps changing for the sake of change.

There was a time when if you googled a name on images to see who it was, a bunch of images would come up that may or may not have been that person but their name would at least appear under the image and you could at least work out the right one.

Now you do it and you wonder why the hell a photo of Elton John or a trifle came up.

I discovered that right at the bottom was a button for 'basic' version (the original) but could i ever get to it? I'd scroll down and no sooner begin to move the cursor to select it than the page would go back up before I could do it. :frown:

I have it saved now.

I actually like the new Google Maps. It has a cleaner look to it, the actual map is larger and now it is easier to look at things closer to the locations you are looking at.

You'll get used to it.. Just like you got used to the old Google Maps when that was new..

I've never known an old one.

I guess it depends what you use them for. If 90% of my use is made ineffective, then I won't be getting used to it, I'll be going elsewhere.

I just looked at that link and took a quick look at the video.

They have reviews for the restaurant you're looking for. Great.

So whereas I would previously google restaurants if I was looking for somewhere to eat, found something possibly interesting including its location, google maps will enable me to look for the location of a restaurant and see reviews.

Pardon me but that looks like the same thing I can already do. Only now, when I want to go straight to a map for something simple, I'll probably have to make several selections before I can see it.

Why am I thinking automated menus when making a phone call?

Still it can't be as bad as the Guardian did with their blogs. Can it? :o

I don't know why these companies feel the need to change things that don't need changing.

I only use google as I can't find a search engine anywhere near as good as google, bing doesn't come close to being good.

FB just changed parts of their website as well.

It's the people working in the companies, they need to justify their existence.

It's a bit like consumer products (especially soaps and detergents) if you consider how many times they are relaunched as "improved" it implies the 10-20 years ago the products were crap, whereas they were practically the same. Just the marketing industry conjuring up the illusion of progress.

True true. I am not sure how much they can improve a basic item like soap. I am a marketing companies worst nightmare, my shopping for most items consists of seeing what is cheapest, and then buying it....I rarely buy anything because a brand.

Sounds like my work though, someone in the company keeps changing excel sheets and I can't figure out why because the old format worked better, but apparently this way is easier, but it creates more work for me so its not easier for me...lol

I think you answered your own question.. The reason Google is so much better is because they are constantly changing and updating their products and services.

Look at what happened to BlackBerry, Nokia, Microsoft in the phone and tablet markets. Way too slow to change things up and got left behind by Google and Apple, two companies who are constantly evolving their products and services.

Interesting that the word IMPROVING is missing from that.

That's what often seems to be forgotten with these things in the haste to update.

Style over substance.

I am fine with change as long as its an improvement, but too many times they change things and its not an improvement at all and just makes it more of a pain to use.

I personally think the new Google Maps is an improvement over the old. With time many more will too, they just need to get used to it, and then get over the stubbornness to admit it :p

There is more map displayed on the screen, it is easier to find local businesses etc in the areas and there is Pegman to give you a tour if you're lost!

Not everything is an improvement, Apple Maps wasn't at first, Microsoft has issues with users adapting to Windows 8. But having the ability to adapt allows companies to react to negative feedback as well as the positive. Apple and Google wouldn't be where they are now if that wasn't the case.

Why would you use google maps to find local businesses? If you know the name of the business you probably know where they are. If you don't, their own website will tell you - or their entry in the phone book, or the equivalent online.

If you are actually looking for a plumber or something, they'll come up on a search and there will be a little map there already.

As I said originally, I want to look at a map to see where a place is and it's harder to do so with the changes.

Tell you what, let's have the local take-away lend books and movies. "But there are already libraries and video stores for that?"
"Ah, but it'll be an upgrade."
"The food will go cold."

:rofl::rofl:
