I spent quite a bit of time in B.C., mainly north and central. All of the places I visited, even very small villages and towns, had a BC transit service, connecting them with nearby towns. For example, I often traveled between Prince Rupert, Terrace, Smithers, Port Edward using the local BC Transit service. The service was not a high speed intercity/town one, and sometimes it took a bit of planning for example to go from Smithers to Prince George, but travel was possible by bus.
Back in Alberta, I remember going skiing to Banff from Calgary, on a stream train, traveling to Red Deer and Edmonton. Along came the cancellation of the Crow Rate and that was that, no more passenger train service. Alberta has nowhere near the level of public transit that B.C. has. I think it would be possible to live in place like Hazelton, B.C. and get around to nearby towns and villages without a car.
