Good Curry in Abbotsford area
I am looking for a good curry house within reach of either Abbotsford or Langley in B.C.
Anyone got any recommendations, please?

12 Samosa's for $9.95 + Tax.
Not eaten anything else there though but they're always busy on a lunchtime. It looks very authentic and nice though. The place is not exactly posh.

As Clearbook end of town is largely an East Indian community, should be no shortage around there.

That's what you'd think! We've been here 3 years and haven't managed to find a decent one yet. I've come to the conclusion that Canadian Indian and English Indian are very different! There is an Indian restaurant in Chilliwack called Shandhar Hut which isn't bad. http://shandhar.ca/ It's not fantastic, but probably the nicest one we've been to.

I made a mistake above. 12 home made samosa for $5.95. Lovely.
I ate a meal there at lunchtime today and would definitely recommend it. It's not the nicest of places in the world from a decor point of view and it's pretty much in the middle of nowhere but boy can they cook.
The majority of diners were Indian and guessing from my previous visits, it's used lots by the local Indian community (being next door to a Hindu temple probably helps somewhat).
Sangam Sweets and Curry Express in Mission. Yum!!

Great recommendation, el_richo.
We will be over there this weekend at some point.

If the food is good, then places do not necessarily need fancy decor to attract custom and this sounds like such a place.
Might even go tonight!
Can you get these samosa and Naan bread to take out and freeze at home?
I assume you are not scoffing a dozen samosa on your own and at one sitting.

Also, I suspect without any evidence to back this up, that as Indian food has become the English cheap meal out the taste has been modified to suite an English palette and lower the cost of production. In Vancouver, where Japanese is the cheap meal out, Japanese food has morphed into something quite unique.

Anyway, to take el_richo's advice that you should go for the food and not the decor we enjoy Baba Sweets & Shivalik Restaurant in Scott Road.

I am sure you are right. "English" Indian food is derived from Bengali immigrants whereas the vast majority of East Indians in BC are Punjabi. I don't know enough about the cooking to know why that makes a difference but it is not hardly surprising that two cultures so far apart have slightly different styles of food. E.g. you get roast lamb and potatoes in both the UK and Greece but you expect them to taste different.

I would prefer to eat more traditional Indian food.
My OH's bachelor pad when he first got here was in a house owned by an Indian family who lived upstairs.
The matriarch of this family was a proper Indian cook!
She took my husband under her wing (because he was without his wife to cook for him!) and was always popping down with curries and stuffed flatbreads and such for him.
They were always vegetarian and were the real homemade deal.
And delicious!
When he was invited to their Hindu wedding there was a veritable army of Indian matrons cooking up a vegetarian storm in the house and they made a fabulous spread for the guests.
If only we could find somewhere like that round here....
