Dear Forum
Hope you are all well!
I am going out to Canada for a year, possibly longer in January 2009 on a WH Visa.
Does anyone have experience of, or know of the best way to get a mountain bike out from the UK to Canada?
Can it be put on a plane, and if so how much roughly does this cost?
Or, would it need to be shipped over seperately?
I guess there is always the option of getting a bike out there but I have only just bought it and would love to have it out there with me. I hear that Canada has some great mountain biking tracks during the summer!
I look forward to hearing from you!
Cheers!

Dismantle it to the point you can get it in a bike box and you will be OK. You aren't the first to do this, in fact it was discussed just last week or the week before as I recall...
Id be tempted to just buy a new one here
, prices always struck me as much better than the UK..then you just have to figure out shipping it back. You could then sell one or other of them and make a few bucks perhaps....

If I were to dismantle it and get it into a bike box, would I then be able to take it on the plane (in the cargo hold of course) with me??? I guess the airliners would be best to contact regarding costs etc.???
Yeah I have thought about maybe buying one out there but I have only just got this one, and it has turned out to be quite a bargain - I got it through work Tax and NI free!!!

That's good news - I was thinking of flying with Zoom so that's cool!!!

Have been with them twice before - to Calgary and Montreal and no problems at all!!!

My mountain bike was brought over from England by a friend a few weeks ago. Put it in a bike bag, take the wheels off, let the tires down, clean it and you will be fine. It came over on Globespan and cost $30 (I think) as it was over the max weight limit for free. Still an absolute bargain. Now I get to ride the North Shore and Whistle on my baby!!!!

Hey Drwoodsy!
Cheers for the message! Sounds good mate!
It must be nice to have your bike out there!!!What is Globespan by the way???
What is Vancouver like to live??? I am very attracted to setting up basecamp there when I head out, although I have never been there, yet.

i have just brought mine over.
fill the bag with clothes etc to protect the bike and you will be able to carry more in the suitcase.they do charge a fee and as stated some dont.
one thing i did forget to mention in the other posts is TAPE the brake levers to the handle bars and dont forget to loosen the disc fluid adjustment so the brake fluid can expand.
goto your local bike shop and ask them for a bike box and the plastic fork protectors(they throw both away as a rule)
hope this helps
