BTW..what does non duty free petrol work out to be in 313 once you figure out the CAN/US exchange rate and the fact the the US continues to use gallons and also a gallon that doesn't match other countries gallons.
They do the conversion on the bridge prices and post a CAD equiv per litre. I can't be bothered to do the maths on regular Detroit pricing myself - see posts passim about my dropping maths before O Grade It's around 1.89 USD a gallon now if you're offering to have a go!

I believe that $1.89 USD per US gallon = $0.56 CDN per CDN litre. I took the $1.89 multiplied it by 1.2 (US to CDN dollar conversion) and then divided by 3.78 (there are 3.78 CDN litres in a US gallon).

Is there a time limit that you are supposed to be in the US to get the duty free price?

I checked out Detroitgasprices.com and the prices are low. I was in Oregon this summer and the cheapest was $3.99/gallon.

"For Canadians crossing into the USA who are used to seeing our gas price in liters, using this simple formula will let you easily compare what you are paying for gas."

Multiply the US price by .275 to get the per liter cost. (In US dollars).

The petrol station is only accessible on the way back in to Canada (it's on the US side just after the tolls). I wonder if it's actually free of duty then as it seems to be the same-ish price as regular Detroit stuff? Or is it just a cheap station next to a duty free shop, dunno

Thanks for the formula Steve, I think I can manage that one in the future

Diesel is still £1.06 a litre here:curse: Oil prices are below $60 but were still paying through the nose.

That formula is based on a static USD/CDN$ conversion. When the value of one of those changes then the .275 ratio will change.

Time to leave the UK. Here in Ottawa, regular petrol is $0,76/l. I think your 1.06/l works out to be $2/l. I do believe that diesel is more expensive here than the 0.76 rate....not sure how much as I never buy it. Diesel tends to be used by big trucks and some Mercedes and VW's here.

It may be duty free, but it's not cheaper than buying elsewhere in Detroit for sure....

I use these to compare what it is here in Windsor and what it is across the border :-

http://www.ontariogasprices.com/Windsor/index.aspx

www.detroitgasprices.com

Most of the cheapest ones in Detroit are cash only though, some of them say, some of them don't...

I've noticed a good 20c a gallon difference on cash/credit prices in Detroit... there was a bit of a stooshie about it a while back but nothing happened, they're all still doing it I always forget to get gas anyway so it's usually the bridge "duty free" one for me anyway
