but if you go work for anybody else we'll sue your ass off..

A mechanism commonly used in the financial world. A trader may be on X months notice (from both sides). He hands in his notice. The last thing the employer wants is for the trader to be active during his notice period (poaching clients etc).

Gardening leave is continuing to be paid until the contract runs out but being prevented from doing anything naughty.
