Flooding Alberta!

I hope that all our friends in Bragg Creek, Canmore, Black Diamond and High River etc are ok.

They're saying this could be three times as severe as the flooding of 2005, just before we got here!

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for parts of southern Alberta, forecasting up to 100 millimetres of rain in the next two days.

Pfft.

Mere drizzle.

And with it being Alberta, it'll probably be dry rain anyway.

thing is, its not even raining at the moment...all i can hear out my window (in the North-East thankfully, away from any water bodies) is helicopters and sirens :(

Not to worry. Water and Oil don't mix.

G'wan, get your Mayor to call in the army.

I hope they help and that everyone in the affected area does OK. But, can I hope that Albertans will stop mocking Toronto because a decade ago their last idiot Mayor (before the current idiot Mayor) called in troops during a perceived emergency?

Calgary Police are asking on behalf of the High River RCMP if anyone can assist in High River with a Passenger carrying motorised Boat!

Woodmanbg lives in Bragg Creek. That's been evacuated now .... How awful. They think 100,000 people may be affected by this.

Key word here is "perceived". :sneaky:

The last thing I would categorize this flooding as, would be a perceived emergency.

It looks way higher than in 2005 to me.

We were here in 2005 and all the trails along the river were washed out in Red Deer, the have called for a local state of emergency here due to water being released from the damn. Its not good, just seen a clip of someone's house floating down the river at Bragg Creek. It's not good, mstay safe people:fingerscrossed:

That's awful. My niece just suffered a similar flooding in the area she lives (Huntsville, ON).

I hope nobody suffers any losses that can't be easily replaced.

Stay safe.

Over 100,000 people evacuated. All schools closed for the day. Downtown core partially flooded and now closed off to everyone except emergency personnel.

This was the Bow River in Cochrane at about 8.30pm last night. It's due to crest by early this morning. Haven't seen the river today yet but I know they were about half an hour away from evacuting one neighbourhood last night.

Amazing images coming out of Calgary this morning - my heart just sinks for the mess to be cleared up.

I seem to remember someone saying that the main problem in 2005 was that one of the dams downriver got blocked up with debris, and that caused a backlog of water that caused all the flooding. Hopefully that won't happen again, and it won't be as severe.

CBC Radio are broadcasting the Calgary morning show from my work - they were evacuated. Our campus also housed nearly 200 evacuees last night in the college residence. It's a mess out there.

Steve_ Jun 21st 2013 3:09 am

Re: Flooding Alberta!

Pretty much everywhere near a river has been evacuated, all along the Bow and Elbow rivers, and all the bridges over the rivers have been closed, so basically stay home.

This is the reason why when people ask on here where they should look for housing I say to check whether you're in a floodplain or not.

Looked from the news like there had been serious property damage along the Bow River in Canmore. Not to mention flooding in Black Diamond and Turner Valley.

Look at High River - it becomes obvious why it got it's name. I have a building I engineered going up right where highway 2a forks east, north of the town. Haven't heard anything from the site yet, but I'm guessing they have some water issues.

That looks worse than the floodplain map for Calgary, but on the other hand they might be being cautious. I bet that guy who bought Jarome Iginla's house for $3.9 million the other day is properly pissed off.

I think most of the damage in Canmore is along Cougar Creek.

Estimated three times the amount of water as the 2005 flood they just said on the news. But the dams are in better shape.

It was when they released excess water from the dam upriver iirc that caused all the problems down river which caused the problems in town. I'm hoping it won't be as bad as 2005 too.

Mayor just said they're going to cut the power to non-essential services in Calgary. Says to get your batteries ready. Too risky with electricity near the water I assume.

From what I can gather, this is only in affected areas and those who share services with affected areas...

i assume this means that us in the far north of the city shouldn't have any power interruptions, although with the way the weather is, i wouldn't rule it out!

some of the pictures coming through twitter are frickin' crazy...can't believe there's been no reported fatalities yet!

stay safe YYC

Went to Safeway to get some milk, couldn't get up the aisles as the line for the checkouts when the full depth of the place. Probably 40 people per checkout in line, walked straight out and got some beer instead, liquor store was empty!

A fistfight over water broke out one of our local Superstores.

People taking the empty twenty liter containers at Canadian Tire and filling them at home I presume.
