Pretty much the same in single family homes out our way. It does drown out the smell of cannabis smoking (coming from the complaining neighbours) though, which is good 
Given that our subdivision is on the edge of the forest, people think there is a forest fire when I smoke stuff. Could be because they can't see the smoke coming out of the 'black fridge' on our bottom patio....
Anyway. Back on topic.
Just get several goldfish and call them all Dave. Does that work?

Cichlid tanks are great if you are going as big as 75 gallons - Just be a bit careful on how you mix some of the breeds - I used to like Oscars in my tanks but they did tend to get a bit aggressive and eat everything else once they got bigger

We've had plenty of tiger barbs and never had aggression problems- I would agree with clown loaches - cute cleaners. Cichlids are a good thought in a large tank - I love Discus ... Less aggressive and less likely to eat their companions.
