Apologies for butting into this esoteric, if somewhat avaricious, thread, but I couldn't help noticing a comment earlier that alarmed me a little.

Novo, regarding your very recent bathtub relocation... did you just move the tub itself? For example, when you turn the taps on, does water still come out? And if so, when you pull the plug, do your feet get wet?

It's just that I do hope you haven't put the principles of good feng-shui ahead of the principles of basic plumbing.

Otherwise, good luck, and put me down for 10% too. :thumbup:

The Molecular Weight of cellulose is 162.16. Now that means that a Lotto ticket, which weighs about 0.1 grams, has roughly 6.16x10^-4 moles of cellulose in it.

Now, the odds of winning the big one on 649 are 14 million to one against, (distinctly better than your chances of winning with an elephant in your house, but that's not the point). But think of this!!!!

6.16x10^-4 moles is a massive 4x10^20 atoms!!!!

There are only 6 numbers that you have to choose to win Lotto 649, so each number is represented by almost 5500 billion atoms!!!!!

See?

How can anybody get it wrong when you have so many choices?

Ok I like the thinking here going with the numbers, but I think you are a magnitude of possibilites out (it's easier than you think). I still think the elephant idea has a certain degree of panache though.

What you missed was all of those moelcules are stacked in 3D, and the numbers are only printed on one side of the paper. Now given that as has been said cellulose is what makes up paper and is polymer of glucose, which is a puckered six-sided ring of five carbons and one oxygen, plus some short side groups (this is like a short back and sides at the barber).

Now the carbon-carbon bonds in the ring have an angle between them of 110 degrees and a length of about 1.5 angstroms so that means the angstroms. From this how far it is across the ring. Add on the diameter of a carbon bonded to two hydrogens and you get about 4 angstroms. That being 0.4 nanometers or 4e-7 Millimetres.

Given a piece of paper is about 0.1mm thick..

0.1/4e-7 Millimetres gives you the number of molecules in the side of the paper.

Using a similar calculation you could work out the number in the surface of the ticket, and thus reduce the scope of you choices, meaning picking the winning number is far easier.

This advice is at least worth 10% of the haul ;)

I like your thinking too, but you're a braver man than I to introduce puckered rings into the discussion. I mean, that's an open invitation for the thread to be hijacked by the bacon on a string crowd around here.

I've been pondering whether or not I need to take account of relativistic effects in choosing the molecules. What do you think?
