In Ontario we don’t get rememberance day as a day off, I think that should be addressed first

We get that in Newfoundand. Mrs Xpat was always surprised that it wasn't a holiday in the UK as well.

Having a day off to celebrate something tragic is weird. Wrong. Roast a turkey, buy in the beer?
beer? Nope.
There should be an indigenous peoples day instead

Not sure I get what there is to celebrate about forcing kids into schools and persecution of indigenous peoples? Maybe some one else can tell us why this is a day to pack beer and go the beach. As I aim sure not many will be sat home thinking of how bad Canada was.
A people’s day would be great idea

Our tax dollars at work (or not, they are paying for a day off)!

Surely it would be a memorial day rather than a celebration day? Nevertheless, not something which needs to be elevated IMO. It was a misguided social policy not a genocide.

Yeh a Memorial Day I suppose, as it was said before any excuse for a day off with pay is ok.
i agree with Bats tho, it’s should be a celebration of indigenous peoples rather than remembering the worse of Canadians cruel actions. Which at the time they may have thought was ok, like people thought slavery was ok :@0

Celebrate doesn't necessarily mean to party on down. It's means to acknowledge or commemorate but it is usually used for happy occasions.

pride has a parade to celebrate, in the same manner, it would be nice to see a full blown indigenous parade once a year. There could be so much colour and sound.

Not sure if the FN would even sanction an ''Indigenous Day"... it is a bit paternalistic. Down in Oz some indigenous are proposing that Australia Day be renamed as Invasion Day.

edit. It's a national day just not a stat day. https://www.aadnc-aandc.gc.ca/eng/11.../1100100013249
on reflection the stat day could be called Reconciliation Day.
